Apparently this agreement was made a few months ago for Mysterio to leave at the end of February. Also, the AAA promotion in Mexico has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday

Vince must be really happy he's gotten rid of all of those lazy Mexicans.
ReplyDeleteYou mean Mexicools
ReplyDeleteGood for Rey. He's been trying to break free from them for I'd say a few years now.
ReplyDelete"Quick, put a mask on Sandow! SanCara! We'll break that world mask record yet!"
ReplyDeleteAnd his last memorable moment in WWE...getting booed out of the building in Philadelphia at Royal Rumble 2014 through no fault of his own.
ReplyDeleteLong may you booyaka, Rey Rey.
Rey did pretty good for himself in a company that treats smaller guys like shit.
ReplyDeleteToo bad they couldn't get him to a work match with Kalisto before leaving to pass that torch.
ReplyDeleteWe'll always have the 2014 Royal Rumble.
ReplyDeleteWell I know it ended ugly but I really think Vince did an awesome job using Rey overall. He's definitely in my top 5 all time favorites and I'd love to say fuck wwe but really Vince did well by him. Gave him big programs, marketed him really well, and let him do a lot of stuff. I know they jobbed him too much during his whc run that was only a few months. Plus they gave him the big belt even if that was a clusterfuck. (Cena pins the most sympathetic babyface ever on the same show that babyface wins a tournament for the belt...do they really wonder why cena can't get 100% support?) But they really gave him a big spot and used him well. Can't wait till they put him in the HOF. I might go to the ceremony.
ReplyDeleteSadly, not much of value was lost here, at this point. I mean, the way WWE is now, and as broken down as Rey is....the guy has no value to the company at this point. He'll go down as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, no doubt, but his usefulness to the WWE was at an end.
ReplyDeleteIf he works a AAA show near by I'll totally go.
ReplyDeleteNow he just has to get rid of those damn milennials.
ReplyDeleteMilenni-cools?
He's been wrestling for like 22 years so it's definitely time to say goodbye but that's some pretty crazy longevity for a guy who worked that style.
ReplyDeleteDidn't he want Del Rio to be the next big star at one point? Not surprising considering he basically looked like a Mexican version of himself.
ReplyDeleteOh I know, and I don't intend to diminish or trivialize Rey or his accomplishments in any way at ALL. I'm just saying that, from the way I was looking at it, it seemed that his usefulness to the company was at an end. I mean...really...unless they're gonna have him manage, or pay him money to be a part (or less) timer....there's not much else left.
ReplyDeleteMysterio from 93-97 was out of this world. And his style spawned a shitload of high-flyers today. He definitely has a place in wrestling history
ReplyDeleteSmall, masked, AND WCW alumni
ReplyDeleteBrass-nots?
ReplyDeleteI'll take Things That Should've Been Done Two Years Ago for $200, Alex...and how did you fit that category on that tiny screen?
ReplyDeleteCrazy that they never really ran that Mysterio/Sin Cara program. Of course it wouldn't have mattered anyway.
ReplyDelete"Oh my God!That's Mysterious Raymond! What's he doing in the Temple, Vamp?!"
ReplyDelete"Well Paul, I'll sure miss that Raymond Mysterious fella. He sure did a great 69. Booyah! Right?"
ReplyDelete- Vincent K McMahon
*Sin Cara head shake*
ReplyDeleteHoly shit, I totally did not read your comment before I posted mine. Too weird.
ReplyDeleteHe was still there?
ReplyDeleteThat still strikes me as the most opportune moment to turn Cena Heel. What kind of arsehole challenges a "friend" to a fight where you have the massive advantage of more rest, especially when they've only just won the title? If Vince had any sense he could've played up the fact Cena sucked up to WWE management and screwed over his friend, had him act like an entitled dick leading up to a Rey/Cena rematch at Summer Slam, then had Punk return with the real belt and have Cena dodge him for months until they have their rematch.
ReplyDeleteBrass-holes?
ReplyDeleteI know he's been there since 2002, but it still feels like Rey had a short career.
ReplyDeleteand Latino.
ReplyDeleteMysterio's knees were shot years ago and Sin Cara Primero had Avian Bone Syndrome that his physical apparently missed. The stars would have had to align perfectly to make that build and match happen.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Rey Rey match was his opener against Kurt Angle @ SS02. Great opener of an underrated show.
ReplyDeleteYep. Del Rio was a Vince project, which is why he kept getting push after push despite never finding a connection with the audience. Vince saw something there no one else did.
ReplyDeleteLE TITS NOW!
ReplyDeleteH.O.F. ?
ReplyDeleteI'd think so...if this release isn't too acrimonious.
That would have been a great story. And even if they didn't want to do that just have a heel win it. Or ya know, a face who's not a beloved underdog.
ReplyDeleteSlam dunk for the hall of fame. Probably could be a headliner.
ReplyDeleteWe've heard BOOYAKA BOOYAKA, THREE FOOT NINE! for the last time.
ReplyDeleteHe did really great in the wwe too. Smackdown 6 baby!!!
ReplyDeleteIts definitely time for Rey to hang them up. I'm down with a AAA farewell tour but really that should be it.
ReplyDeleteThe day Mysterio won the Royal Rumble was the day WWE drenched kayfabe in gasoline and torched it forever.
ReplyDeleteHaha I get it..."short" career
ReplyDeleteAbout damn time.
ReplyDeleteJAP ANUS RELATIONS
ReplyDeleteSadly they released him months ago but his knees are so bad he finally just got out the door.
ReplyDeleteTHE PENIS MIGHTIER
ReplyDeleteThis is hardly big news.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this match
ReplyDeleteHe was my youngest son favorite wrestler back in 2010 or so. Definitely a guy they marketed well to kids and got as much out of him as they could. Honestly, I was surprised they pushed him at all.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a big fan if his. He was one of those guys I enjoyed watching but wasn't actually cheering for to win. Still, happy to see him finally get his release, I know he's been back since but I can't remember him doing anything since he won lost to Del Rio on Raw not long after he won the WWE Chanpionship for an hour.
ReplyDeleteI do, its still real to me....
ReplyDeleteHe got the shit booed out of him when he came out at 30 in last year's Rumble. That's about all I have. Was he on the Mania card at all? Maybe the battle royal or was he hurt again?
ReplyDeleteMysterio knew it was time to get to steppin before Sin Cara outclassed him.....
ReplyDeleteQuestion -- when Rey officially retires does he take the mask and boots off and leave them at the entrance and then get lawndarted one last time by Kevin Nash?
ReplyDeleteYeah, Sin Cara is totally the best high flyer at the local Urgent Care center.
ReplyDeleteIt's insane when I think about this, but from January 2007 to April 2014 Rey Mysterio only wrestled on 42% of WWE's PPVs because of his injuries. Got this breakdown from Reddit:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/2xahag/from_january_2007_through_april_2014_rey_mysterio/
He was in the battle royal. He was on RAW the next night, and that was the last we saw of him.
ReplyDeleteHe's 40 years old. By Lucha standards, he could spend the next 20 years doing six-man matches with minimal ring time and making bank.
ReplyDeleteJeez that's almost as sad as Andre's final run in All Japan.
ReplyDeleteSin Cara's work is legendary my friend, the use of the lighting during his matches is the most innovative thing of the 21st century.....
ReplyDeleteMine is vs Eddie at Havoc '97 by a country mile.
ReplyDeleteTHE RAPISTS
ReplyDeleteHe's earned the right to ride off into the sunset like you suggest. That man, pound for pound, gave as much in the ring as any wrestler I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely lots of good stuff to choose from.
ReplyDeleteI could be wrong, but I think every time they tried, one of the two was injured.
ReplyDeleteYou've obviously not watched Khali perform in the squared circle...
ReplyDeleteWHORE ADS
ReplyDeleteThat was the match that I finally started liking Eddie. I always knew he was a good worker, but his personality, etc. just didn't do anything for me. That selling by Rey really put Eddie over for me. Rey was legit such a selfless worker that got so many guys over. He was certainly never a jobber in the true sense of the word, but he definitely had that ethos to make look their absolute best.
ReplyDeleteThey were doing angles with people putting voodoo curses on people and people throwing fireballs from their hands at people for more than a full decade before that. Kayfabe was long dead before Mysterio won the Rumble.
ReplyDeleteNot a popular opinion, but never cared about him. Thought he was a great Crusierweight, but never loved his character. And hated his special move.
ReplyDeleteIt's for the best, they were clearly never going to reach an agreement.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a fan. His goody good persona grated at times but he always brought it in the ring.
Rey probably legit had the best WWE career of any of the WCW invasion, give or take a Hogan.
ReplyDeleteHe moved merch like nobodies business but even still making money never stopped Vince from not pushing someone because he was small from a rival company or whatever. Hell he even kept his gimmick!
ReplyDeleteI usually don't care about the underdog in a match. There's only two guys that have ever made me root for the underdog: Rey Mysterio and Brian Pillman
ReplyDeleteDaniel Bryan gets no love?!
ReplyDeleteThe Mulkeys!
ReplyDeleteUm, Jamie Noble would like a word....
ReplyDeleteYa know, I like the guy and all, but he doesn't inspire strong feelings in me one way or the other.
ReplyDeleteMysterio would always inspire me to turn the channel, just never cared for the guy except when Nash was throwing him....
ReplyDeleteAs well as his awesome matches with Eddie, Jericho etc, he's one of the few to get a genuinely good match out of JBL. Their main event at JD '06 is shockingly good.
ReplyDeleteI've never really felt like Bryan is an underdog. He seems confident and efficient enough and his offense looks credible. He's not doing all sorts of razzle dazzle stuff.
ReplyDeleteHe's more of a Chris Benoit (yeah I know, when he wrestled and hadn't murdered anybody) pitbull type.
When Reigns beast him in the Fastlane match the story didn't make a lot of sense. The talented vet dominated him until Reigns hits his move and wins out of nowhere. The match actually didn't make Reigns look more credible with the win. Reigns having an answer for Bryan's technique would have been a better story.
Chavo following Eddie around with Pepe is what did it for me.
ReplyDeleteBryan is put out there as the ultimate underdog though....
ReplyDeleteHot crowd, hot opener, great show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epyYeN_cdG0
ReplyDeleteYou say that like you dont hope they do exactly that.
ReplyDeleteHall Of Fame easily. He might be the greatest short wrestler of all time
ReplyDeleteDamn, no love for rey at the BoD.
ReplyDeleteThey did him dirty as shit in the end but he had a great US career.
Pretty much featured on tv strong for 20 years.
Had he been a foot taller he would have been more regarded.
Cheers.
Nah. That's clearly Eddie. He won the belt from BROCK LESNAR (with Goldberg assist, WCW go!), defended it at WM with Benoit as the other belt winner. At least 2-3 memorable characters (Latino Heat, Los Guererros).
ReplyDeleteJericho would be the other one, multiple belt runs, 15+ WWE/WWF years and still counting.
man, favorite Rey matches?
ReplyDeleteRey Mysterio vs. Juventud vs. Kidman
Rey Mysterio vs. Bam Bam
Rey Mysterio vs. Psychosis at Bash At The Beach
Rey Mysterio vs. HBK at the Eddie Guerrero RAW tribute
list goes on and on
That was definitely a gimmick pulled too early. He could've milked Pepe for years.
ReplyDeleteWhoa.
ReplyDeleteDel Rio had some buzz coming in. Its just they killed it after the rumble win
Much as I love Cena-Punk at SS '11, Cena-Mysterio for the vacant big belt could probably have headlined that show and done just as well.
ReplyDeleteAbout 7 people.
ReplyDeleteMaybe 8... If he didnt like his own comment.
Or 6...
6-8 people
I dunno, I don't think milk from a wooden horse is very good for you.
ReplyDeleteSky Low Low and Little Beaver might have a little something to say about that....
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I'll get buried for this, but he WAS too small. I've got no problem with HBK, Bryan, Eddie. Hell even Malenko was fine. But Rey was freaking TINY. It was like watching Chyna wrestle guys. Just couldn't suspend disbelief that much.
ReplyDeleteIf he'd been a foot taller then he would have been lost in the shuffle. Being 5 feet tall made him standout.
ReplyDeleteand his a bit more toned-down "main event" style was great as well - just look at his matches against Jericho, Undertaker or Edge.
ReplyDeletemore like: 1-2-3 Kid gets no love?!
ReplyDeleteYah but short-term reigns are necessary to elevate those upper-upper mid-carders to bring them enough legitimacy to be able to plug & play them in main events when necessary. Either due to injuries, suspensions, or transitional spots, or any other applicable reasons.
ReplyDeleteGuys like Mysterio especially who were mad popular & mad marketable. I have to believe though in a time period without TWO World Championships Mysterio does not get his run. And stays remembered for getting darted by Big Sexy.
King Kong Bundy should induct Mysterio and then splash Jim.
ReplyDelete5 people agreed with him though. Or 4 unless he liked his own comment. I didnt upvote either one. Still too close tell. Tune into Nitro to find out!
ReplyDeleteJericho is Mr. House Show. I doubt he'll ever actually appear on Tee-Vee again.
ReplyDeleteKerwin white was better. And whiter.
ReplyDeleteThe WHC belt he had on smackdown looked silly on him. It looked like a 7 year old trying on adult shoes. The spinner belt he had for like 9 minutes looked better on him.
ReplyDeleteWerent they tagging at one point before WM and that was the " hot"rumor until they either realized sin cara botched everything or Rey got injured or both?
ReplyDeleteNever minded one bit when Rey won the title in 2006 even it being largely due to Eddie Guerrero. I believe he would have won a title at some point anyway.
ReplyDeleteWatching Rey in WCW at a young age was magic, so I'll always fondly remember him for that. Oh, and for him and Taker surprising the hell out of me with a really good match at the...2010 rumble was it?
ReplyDeleteWhen he was good, he was AWESOME. But when he started going downhill, yeesh. And fuck the 619.
I FUCKED YOUR MOTHER, TREBEK
ReplyDeleteFuck that half-pint bitch.
ReplyDeleteObviously he was shorter than the guys you listed, but I'm pretty sure he was 'bigger' (in the thick sense) than HBK (though Shawn had a tremendous physique), Bryan and maybe Malenko.
ReplyDeleteI thought it made a fair bit of sense. Bryan brought his technical wrestling ability, Reigns brought his size and strength. At the end, size and strength won out.
ReplyDeleteRVD or Booker had good rus as well.
ReplyDeleteIll catch it on the network.
ReplyDeleteHe belonged under the ring with Hornswoggle....
ReplyDeleteThey dont count. Im talking all the post WCW buyout guys.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Those three are the ones that make me wonder if Vince had made moves on I them before. He really seemed to I take to them.
ReplyDeleteGiven how talented Rey was in the ring, one can only wonder how good he would have been had he not had something like a dozen knee operations. I feel sorry for Rey when he gets older because he may end up in a wheelchair in his 50s.
ReplyDeleteDid he "deserve" to be World Champ in WWE? Dunno. I hated his WWE intro music for sure. But he was a hell of an entertaining wrestler who participated in some of the greatest matches in the last 25 years in the US - he deserves to be remembered fondly for that.
Damn that crowd was volcanic!
ReplyDeleteThe year he did, no. However, there was a time before that in which he was quite over and it made sense to give him a run with the belt.
ReplyDeleteWhen he was good, he was AWESOME. But when he started taking in more steroids than the love child of Scott Steiner and The Dynamite Kid, yeesh
ReplyDeleteRey/Edge vs Benoit/Angle all day, everyday.
ReplyDeleteI think he was great in WCW from the beginning to 1998 or so. When they tried to give the cruisers storylines and micwork, they lost all their value, which was, just to show great matches which meant something.
ReplyDeleteBooker was more tailor made for the WWE. RVD had the same boring interview style and basically had the same matches over and over.
ReplyDeleteBooker had an IC title run, won the US title 3 times, the Hardcore title twice, King of the Ring, had 3 tag title runs and a World title run
ReplyDelete
