The most bogus act Sid ever pulled off

Hey Scott,

Can you explain why so many people seemed to have thought Sid had the potential to be a top draw, "the guy" level, main event player? Obviously he's got an imposing physique and had a certain charisma in that insane intensity, but I can't imagine why anyone would ever see him as anything more than a great candidate for Hogan's 80s monster heel of the season. He could never work, to the point that he was sometimes dangerous, he got by on that intensity in his promos, pretty much never saying anything of substance, and his energy was so aggressively (p)sychotic that I can't imagine why anyone would ever think he could be a babyface. I'm mystified as to why this guy was being positioned as the future at certain points in both WWF and WCW- did he ever really draw? Why? Who was paying to see this guy?!

Best
Casey

Way more people than were ever going to pay to watch Roman Reigns.  Sid at least had an actual star presence and charisma in his own weird retarded way that is sorely lacking in today's "stars".

Comments

  1. Reigns has half the brain that Sid has.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Sid was awesome. He was dangerous in a way that only Vader, Undertaker and 97-98 Kane had. That type of charisma is hard to come across.

    ReplyDelete
  3. He was a monster. Not many people are able to get that vibe across to the fans

    ReplyDelete
  4. And he doesn't want to go to prison for killing someone in the ring. Him shooting on Reigns would result in immediate death

    ReplyDelete
  5. You might as well ask why fans were so into a blubbery Dusty Rhodes.

Sid had an awesome, intimidating look and a legit "psycho" aura that gave him credibility in a way that fit his character perfectly.

Was he great in the ring? No, especially when Michaels was sandbagging his powerbombs. But he had the right look and fans bought into him. As Meltzer said in his Bryan/Reigns rant, sometimes charisma is all that you need.

    ReplyDelete
  6. And just think of how over he could've been if the announcers mentioned how big his hands were too

    ReplyDelete
  7. I wonder when fans will realize that Brock is 100% about the money. He will do whatever Vince pays him to do as long as Vince pays him what he wants.

He didn't bitch about putting over Cena at Extreme Rules 2012 because he was paid a princely sum to do so.

He doesn't work more shows because he is being lazy. It's because he wants more money to do so.

He doesn't defend the title more often because he's inconsiderate. It's because he wants more money if he's going to make more appearances.

He didn't walk out of RAW because he doesn't want to put over Reigns. It's because he got in a dispute for more money.

Lesnar would probably lay down for Zack Ryder at a house show tomorrow night if Vince paid him enough. He doesn't care. He knows people know he's a legit bad ass and that pro wrestling is fake.

Lesnar is probably the last pro wrestler on the planet who would go into business for himself. He doesn't care about making himself look tough. He IS tough.

    ReplyDelete
  8. When Sid was beating up jobbers, then the jobbers were getting put on stretchers, then he was beating the up more after they were on the stretchers... that guy was fucking cool. Also his chokeslam and powerbomb were things of beauty even if he didn't have like, anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Sid/hbk at SurSer is one of my favourite matches of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Go watch old Skyscrapers matches ... when Sid's in they pop, when he's on the apron they chant for him. He's ALWAYS been able to get a crowd. I have mad respect for Sid - you really believed he could kill someone. Go watch Survivor Series 96 and see Sid in all his glory.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sid was over because he was big, tall, and menacing, yet athletic. The number of guys in that category during the late-80's, early-90's could be counted on one hand - Undertaker, John Nord, Sid, and Nash are the ones I can come up with. Out of those 4, Sid looked like he had the most potential.

It's sort of like saying "Greg Oden was a bad pick." If you knew then what you know now, that's true; however, the information at the time said otherwise. Sid had an energy, was young, and just looked like a bad ass. It also turned out he was a dumb ass, but it is a thin line between the two.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Plus, at the time, the powerbomb = death.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sid is what happens when you mush Undertaker and Kevin Nash together. There is always a need for a tall imposing wrestler.

Physically shooting is kind of a televised crime. If he tried to shoot pin, sure, but I think the emailer wants a public beating for Reigns

    ReplyDelete
  15. Scott mentions it in his review of the show; Sid's power bomb of Bulldog at Summerslam '96 is amazing. He just dumps him from 7 feet up. Check it out of you haven't seen it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Agreed, the guy was awesome and fit his role well.

    ReplyDelete
  17. And the guy live tweets Raw every week and that's awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No way Brock would risk a future payday. Agree with Scott (who never responds to MY emails *sulk in the corner*) that he's way too much of a businessman for that.

I think the only way Brock would go against orders would be if someone was working too stiff on him, trying to act like a big dog and show how hard they are, then he would probably take them apart before slipping back into character and taking the pin.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Good big boot and leg drop also.

    ReplyDelete
  20. And usually shits on the product in the same ways we do here.

    ReplyDelete
  21. ARRRRGH THE BARBARIANFebruary 27, 2015 at 7:56 AM

"He was huge and crazy, why would wrestling fans like him?"

    ReplyDelete
  22. There's a term Terry Pratchett uses about a character (Nobby Nobbs) which I think fits well with Sid - "Charisn'tma."

He was fascinating, like a rare skin disease or a tragic accident. People watched him out of sheer morbid curiosity.

    Everyone loves a genuine crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dat leg break, tho!

    *cringe*

    ReplyDelete
  24. The fact that Sid got over to main event level despite all the starts and stops... is why. There is zero reason he should have been given that many chances at the top... but he got over every single time.

Other than Brock Lesnar, there has never been a guy who housed the look of a professional wrestler better than Sid.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I don't think that's fair -- that suggests people were mainly into him in a trainwreck way. Definitely toward the end of his career in WCW that might have been the case, but not in the 1990s when he was crazy over.

    ReplyDelete
  26. ... and (D) we watch the most boring product in the history of the United States of America, where nothing remotely interesting will ever happen... period.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't like to consider any question stupid...I've asked some dumb ones in my day. But no wrestler is ever going to shoot or go into buisness for themselves. You could count on one hand the number of unique non recurring situations it's ever happened in. The main event of Wrestlemania is not one of them. Put the fantasy away

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sid is one of those guys who just looks like a wrestler. I can't imagine there was ever anything else Sid Eudy could have done for a living.

As has been said, he had intangibles. He was just interesting to see especially when placed in the role of barely holding it together, borderline incoherent violence machine.

Vader is the only other guy to come off that way, but he had to go a different route to get there. Vader always felt like he could be pointed in a direction and given a goal and would achieve it.

Sid just seemed crazy. He didn't even really have to snap, he was just always at that maximum level of crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I only really got to see him in full-blown Lunatic mode, so my perception's probably a bit skewed then!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Watch him walk out to the ring at Survivor Series '96 and try not to think to yourself... "damn, that's cool."

... and that was just him walking.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This was slightly before my time so this has always confused me. Sid's fist-bumping fans and acting like a full-on babyface, but despite the cheers in that building wasn't he a straight-up heel?

    ReplyDelete
  32. It's one I hadn't seen until the Network. I was familiar with it and knew it was something of a cult favorite, and I always just assumed it was because of some weird, ironic smark appreciation of Sid. No, it's just a straight-up awesome match. I'd put it on par with Shawn's match with Nash earlier in the year and it's not far behind some of his matches with Taker.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, he was a heel but the msg crowd treated him like a babyface.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Nah, the worst that would happen is Reigns would get a lump growing out the top of his head, and see birds flying around him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's kinda what I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Belee_Matt!_INDEED!!!February 27, 2015 at 8:17 AM

6'9", 300 lbs. Had a jawbone that could cut ass....glass....Can we start over?

    "Sorry buddy, we're live!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sid was always over in the Northeast. Even in ECW. Sid had that "I catch you sleeping with my wife, then I kill you" look!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. This was during "stripper Shawn" era. Though he certainly didn't get the 50/50 reactions that Cena gets, there were a good portion of the crowd -- especially in smarkier cities like New York -- who were tired of Michaels' act.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There are big guys who you see walking toward you on the street and you say "whoa that dude's big." Then there are big guys you see walking toward you on the street and you say "Jesus Christ, let's get the hell out of here." Sid was the latter.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sid was a face in 96 in the lead up to Survivor Series. He was teaming with Shawn and beat Vader for the title shot.

    ReplyDelete
  41. He was the #1 heel in the promotion, but that male stripper/David Lee Roth shit Shawn was trying to pull off doesn't fly in NY.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bingo. Sid has the look of the type of guy who when he walks into a bar, you probably start looking for an exit.

Especially if he's carrying a squeegee or safety scissors (sorry, couldn't help it).

    ReplyDelete
  43. This I knew, which is why I was confused about Sid acting like a full-blown face. It was clearly the smarky MSG crowd shitting on Shawn and cheering for the heel, but the first time I saw it I was thinking...that doesn't mean you act like a babyface, dickhead. Be the cool heel and don't acknowledge the crowd either way.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Belee_Matt!_INDEED!!!February 27, 2015 at 8:29 AM

Best post about Lesnar ever. I've said the same things in the past.

Brock likes to swim in his money chamber, bang his wife on top of it, and drink Coors on top of it. He likes to kill moose in his backyard and wrap it up in money.

    That is all.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'm fairly certain Brock is smart enough not to commit felonious assault on live PPV. I mean, I've never talked to the guy, but e graduated college. I'm pretty sure he's not retarded.

    ReplyDelete
  46. WHAT IS YOUR QUESTION, LITTLE MAN!?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I wasn't confused about why the MSG crowd would boo someone like Shawn, just whether Sid was an actual babyface or was just being cheered for being not Shawn.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sid was HUGE, had a great look, cut an intense promo, and had a killer finish.

    ReplyDelete
  49. "Sid is one of those guys who just looks like a wrestler. I can't imagine there was ever anything else Sid Eudy could have done for a living."

    Softball.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This. If Vince asked Lesnar to dress up like Doink the Clown and fire Jimmy John Sandwiches into the crowd with a t-shirt cannon the night after WM, as long as the check cleared, Lesnar would do it with no problem.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Belee_Matt!_INDEED!!!February 27, 2015 at 8:33 AM

I respect Brock the most out of anyone in the business, and the reason is simple.

He made a name for himself, and since then has made every smart move you possibly can while doing the least amount of damage to himself. When you hire him, you know what he wants....money. You get 100% of him with the dates that have been made. Then he's gone, and he doesn't give a shit about anything else until the next time he gets paid.

    Period.

Love that guy. The only guy Vince doesn't really own (besides Punk I guess).

    ReplyDelete
  52. when it started coming out that Oden's legs were of different length, you could say it ..... shit, I'm just attacking an analogy for no reason, aren't I? carry on.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Amazing GamecockFebruary 27, 2015 at 8:35 AM

I love how every Scott Keith post is now a shot at Roman Reigns. According to my girlfriend, Roman Reigns is a sexy manbeast, and that is all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The Amazing GamecockFebruary 27, 2015 at 8:36 AM

Brock only cares about three things - Brock, Money, and Sable Boobies. The money helps keep the Sable Boobies up and running.

Dude has his priorities in check.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yep. You hear about physical charisma and being an imposing presence? That's Sid.

Batista? I'm sure he could kick my ass, but he's a guy you see walk into a bar and you're not sure if he's really tough or if it's all show (the aviators/half-open button down/skinny jeans look doesn't help).

Sid looks like the guy who stands in the corner all night and never smiles. The guy you purposely avoid because you're not sure if he's gonna explode at any moment and if he does, shit's getting real QUICK. That's a guy who is legitimately intimidating and had the perfect facial expressions to go with it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think Sid being from West Memphis, Ark., definitely helped the crazy factor. That area is...rough.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "According to my Vince McMahon, Roman Reigns is a sexy manbeast, and that is all that matters."

    FTFY

    ReplyDelete
  58. I thought he was "From anywhere he damn pleases!"

    ReplyDelete
  59. This reminds me of another common, recent juxtaposition that Masked Man made a good point about: it gets really annoying how everyone praising NXT needs to shit on Raw to prop it up even more. I feel the exact same way, but NXT wouldn't exist without Raw. Raw is too expansive and caters to too large of an audience to appease hardcore fans like us. That's *why* NXT exists as it does.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Ha, well, his official listing is from West Memphis. I think Lawler took a shot at it during a Sid match once.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wtf is this guy talking about. Sid was the shit!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sid is WRESTLING PERSONIFIED. It's as simple as that, casey

    ReplyDelete
  63. Throw in a pre-match promo from the ghost of Verne Gagne offering Brock $100,000 to take the belt to the AWA and I'm sold!

    TESTIFY.

    ReplyDelete
  65. On our move out to Texas a few years back we had dinner at a Denny's in West Memphis, AR. Sid is definitely a one-of-a-kind specimen from West Memphis.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Someone, somewhere MUST have brought a camcorder to one Sid softball game...I just want to see one inning

    ReplyDelete
  67. If this guy is like me and wasn't watching in the early-mid 90's, I see where he's coming from. I think a lot of the love for Sid is either in an ironic sense or people remembering how they thought of him when they were fans as kids. I wasn't a fan as a kid and Sid was before my time as a fan, period. So even though I can appreciate his crazy, weird, intense charisma, he really does nothing for me outside of the SurSer '96 match with Shawn.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Are today's wrestling fans getting dumber each day? No wrestler is ever going to shoot on another in the ring at Wrestlemania just to risk legal action. I remember even hearing people talking that crap how because Hogan wasn't a great worker people should shoot on him.

    ReplyDelete
  69. The Love-Matic Grampa!February 27, 2015 at 8:49 AM

I think a lot of the love for Sid is either in an ironic sense or people
remembering how they thought of him when they were fans as kids.

Or they could just, you know, be a fan of the guy.

People are allowed to like and dislike things without some caveat always being attached. I don't like Orton, but I accept that people do and I don't try and analyze their reasons to death. I just accept the difference of opinion and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sid was fucking awesome at just seming like a big star. I was at the 96 MSG Survivor Series and that dude OWNED the place. Roman Reigns could wrestle 200 years and never sniff being that over.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love Sid. I'm not sure if he was supposed to be a heel or a face at SurSer 96 but he was the fucking man that night. Roman will never be as over as Sid was when he beat Shawn.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I fucking LOVED Sid! His crazy stupid promos were the best -- much better than Warrior's strange promos for sheer WTF? At least a tie. Also his power bomb was great looking -- probably because he really dropped guys on their heads. Bad for them, but looked bad ass to me. Also his son was one of my faves on Big Brother.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I really loved how he said "MASTER...AND THE RULER...OF THE UNIVERSE"

    ReplyDelete
  79. I said "make living". Not use as a cover for his serial killing.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Only time I ever liked Sid was in his initial WCW run as a Skyscraper and as a Horseman. Otherwise, I found him boring as shit.

    ReplyDelete
  81. WrestleMania is ending with Reigns winning. People need to accept it.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I didn't say those were invalid reasons to like something, or that people should feel bad about liking a thing for those reasons. There's plenty of things I like in an ironic sense, in that I'd normally find them objectively bad or not something that is my normal tastes, but I get a kick out of them anyway. And there's plenty of things I like for nostalgic reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I AM THE MASTER AND RULER OF THE UNIVERSE!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I once hit the third base coach on the next field over with a ball I'd hit about 400 feet.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  92. Vince wanted to be Shawn Michaels. He thought that's what every man wanted to be.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I always forget Sid was in ECW for a cup of coffee. Wasn't he aligned with Justin Credible?

    ReplyDelete
  94. I've said these in previous threads but it's applicable in response to the e-mailer's question:

Brock would lay down to a Superman punch and spear in 20 seconds as long as the massive check he'd get for it clears.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I Don't Know.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think if you show HBK/Sid at SS for a casual fan, he'll think Sid is the good guy rather than HBK.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I believe it was ruler of the world...or the squirrels. He was whispering it after all.

    ReplyDelete
  98. When I was in 5th grade (89-1990) kids who only watched WWF would talk about this guy named Sid Viscious that they saw on tbs, or in magazines. They were amazed. He actually drew wwf fanatics due to his size, charisma and attitude. Promoters knew this and that's why he kept getting chances

    ReplyDelete
  99. 96 HBK was insufferable to any male fan above age 8

    ReplyDelete
  100. Vince's fawning over him on commentary didn't help matters.

    ReplyDelete
  101. No. He was a surprise and managed by Jeff Jones.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love that Vince still claims he was really the Stone Cold character. Ugh to that family and their delusions

    ReplyDelete
  103. Yes, looks like he's having an orgasm every time HBK is doing something.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Reigns was already at least that over as part of the Shield (and even at first after the breakup). I know that's not exactly the same thing, but it's a weird juxtaposition, comparing a guy in his first-ever singles push to a guy from a totally different era who got lots of pushes. Just because this push is failing doesn't mean Reigns will never get over (and I would hardly say he's completely un-over right now).

    ReplyDelete
  105. Exactly. Brock's a farm kid from South Dakota who gives two shits about pro wrestling. He got in it to get paid. He won't shoot on anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I wonder if he will still think that when the somoan titties kick in. Considering the flack jacket they probably already have

    ReplyDelete
  107. Lesnar quote:

"It's very basic for me. When I go home, I don't buy into any of the bullshit. Like I said, it's pretty basic: train, sleep, family, fight. It's my life. I like it. I was a star at the University of Minnesota. I went on to WWE. Wannabe NFL player. And here I am, the UFC Heavyweight Champion. I just don't put myself out there to the fans and prostitute my private life to everybody. In today's day and age, with the Internet and cameras and cell phones, I just like being old school and living in the woods and living my life. I came from nothing, and at any moment, you can go back to having nothing."

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  112. "WHOA-HO-HO-HO-HO! LOOK AT HIM!"

    ReplyDelete
  113. Sid was literally awesome. Especially coming down to the ring with that psycho theme music - he just seemed like a legit killer

    ReplyDelete
  114. He probably would've had a good run there if Heyman could've afforded him. He only did five appearances and he was OVER

    ReplyDelete
  115. Seriously. Only 5-10% of the audience would've gotten that.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Seeing him fist bumping the crowd was awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The great trick the Psycho ever pulled was convincing people he could draw

    ReplyDelete
  118. HBK climbs the top rope, little girls cheer.

Sid grabs him, everyone cheers him.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Lesnar went to the Kevin Nash school of "How to Make a Shit-ton of Money in Wrestling" and ended up eclipsing the master himself.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sid's entrance is pretty fun. Screaming at the crowd "WHO'S THE MAN?!?!" and people pointing in the tight MSG aisle at him and screaming back "YOU ARE SID!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  121. Keeps my armor nice and white while I'm being an sjw.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Sid = perma-over

    ReplyDelete
  123. If wasn't for the camera spot, Sid wrestled as a pitch perfect babyface.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I enjoyed Sid's small ECW run when he's crash matches and just powerbomb people through tables.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Fucking hell, that needs to be their new ad campaign.

They need to cut you a check.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Sid was a method actor. I mean his match with Hogan is pure theatre with a few moves thrown in.

Even his first 1995 IYH match with Nash (Diesel) was descent from the theatre aspect and McMahon's and Hendrix'a commentary.

    ReplyDelete

    Er, I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Also, the pop for him in that match - both his entrance and the finish - is what really caught my attention at the time. People were crazy for him, louder than people were for Warrior the previous months.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Skyscrapers vs. Dynamic Dudes at Bash '89 is the most enjoyable extended squash match you'll ever see.

  131. Sid was most certainly a face when he returned in '96. The "psycho" thing was their out in case they wanted him to do heelish things like nail an old man with a video camera, but Shawn/Sid was definitely promoted as a face v face match.

They pushed him more solidly heel for the Rumble rematch (beating up Lothario's family, etc) but even that didn't stick as he was definitely a tweener for the rest of his run in 1997. And still big pops throughout.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Just because Roman Reigns is being rushed to the top doesn't mean he doesn't have a star presence about him as well lol. Haters gonna hate.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Sure, but giving him a little grit isn't exactly him being positioned as the company's #1 heel at the time. He was still way more a face than a heel, even if they were on the road to positioning him that way for the Rumble.

I think it underscores how screwed up their plans got when Shawn refused to work with Vader. They really didn't have a top heel that was available to work with him. Foley was for Taker. Austin was for Hart. They had to go with Sid for Shawn by default when Sid was arguably just as big a face as Shawn.

  134. Exactly. It was perverse entertainment.

As a 7 year old mark, I found Sid Vicious terrifying, especially when he was powerbombing dudes, pulling them off a stretcher, and beating on them some more. He had that maniacal charisma to go along with the size and physique. He was an awesome monster heel to challenge guys like Sting or Hogan, but I agree he was never going to be The Guy in any real sense. When he jumped to WWF in '91 I remember thinking, "That's still Sid Vicious, he can't be Hogan's buddy, it's just a matter of time before he kills him. Don't trust him Hulkster!"

    ReplyDelete
  136. Hardcore fans are weirdly obsessed with him. I mean they hate him but can't stop talking about him. Its strange.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Don't ever disrespect Sid. Let's not do that. Thanks

  140. So dumb of Vince to agsin flub getting a wcw star by changing his name, gimmick and reason he was over.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Well...fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Dunn, Big Steph, and Vince today would stop him from doing that. It's sets a bad tone and resembles a gang greetings.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I've always felt that Bray Wyatt's cadence is a very even mix of Jake Roberts and Sid. Sid wasn't the first or only dude to do it, but that "i'm gonna whisper and enunciate very clearly to get you to listen to me THEN I'M GONNA SCREAM IN YOUR FACE" thing? I always think Sid.

Yes. Sid should never have been Hulk's buddy. He should have shown up at SummerSlam as a surprise (not guest referee), powerbombed both Hogan & Warrior into stretcher jobs, then wreaked havoc on ever WWF TV show til Wrestlemania. Put him in a team for Survivor Series, only to eliminate all four opponents with powerbombs before turning on ALL his teammates and killing them too. He dominates the Royal Rumble only for a returning Hulk Hogan to eliminate him and send Sid into the stratosphere of insanity. He targets Hogan allies specifically, "injuring" Jim Duggan, Boss Man, etc. to get over as Hogan's greatest challenge ever. Sid says he is going to end Hulk's career at Mania. Warrior does a run-in (retaliation for the SummerSlam '91 attack) and Hulk wins. Sid & Warrior carry the house show circuit, along with some Hogan/Warrior vs. Flair/Sid tag main events.

  146. Sid got a bigger face reaction against Michaels at SS96 than Roman Reigns will get against Cena whenever they square off.

  153. This. I don't disagree, but it gets boring. Let's watch some classic shows on the Network or something!!

  157. If you bundle up the gimmicks that can be attributed to Vince and his want to be them, You have a Swaggering Anti-Authority Bleached Blonde Playboy who smokes cigars, has millions of dollars that he lords of the people, and thinks every women in the worlds wants him.

    Sounds about right.

    ReplyDelete
  158. On the same day Leonard Nimoy died? That poor guy is going to be horribly overshadowed.

    ReplyDelete
  159. No way. If he does that and the UFC fizzles (he gets beaten repeatedly, diverticulitis flares up again) then he has no revenue stream left.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Sid is pretty much the perfect Pro Wrestler, unfortunately he was wrapped up inside a prima-donna doofus. I still go go ballistic shit for the kip-up spot he did though.

    ReplyDelete
  161. I find Brock so interesting, in that he obviously doesn't give a shit about "this business", or tradition, or "doing the right thing", etc., but he has no ego when it comes to just going out and doing whatever the boss wants. No questions, no arguments, just jobbing to JTG in thirty seconds while wearing lingerie if that's what Vince wants.

    It's so refreshing.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Agreed 100%.

I said it upthread, but he keeps it simple: You come to an understanding, pay him, and he does everything and anything you ask. No more, no less. If you sign him for twenty days, he'll give you 110% on those twenty days with no argument or ego, but if you want twenty-one, you better pay up.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Hence why Bob Holly may be the dumbest person on Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Casey, if you're reading this between classes: Sid was the man. I paid to see him. Get back to school.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Nothing ironic here. Sid was one of my faves. Funny how good booking of a guy can get him over. I don't get how Vince forgot that.

    ReplyDelete
  166. During The Shield or especially after the breakup, Reigns was never as over as Sid was.

    ReplyDelete
  167. On the topic of Brock shooting, I have a theory that him not shooting on Trips at "Summerslam 2012" hurt his (Brock's) aura a bit.

Before that match, I think many people had this image of Brock as a loose cannon and total dickhead that possibly couldn't be trusted to remain professional. He had bad blood with Vince due to past legal reasons, and Trips most likely talked a lot of trash about Brock being weak and lazy and "unable to hang". Not that Brock would completely assault him in the ring, but at least throw a few hard punches, just to let Trips know who's boss, right?

Before the match, lots of people were predicting at least a small degree of problems, but after the match, I think he lost a little bit of the image and buzz of him being an out-of-control lunatic.

    Or maybe it's just me.

    ReplyDelete
  168. HBK walks up to Brock: "Dey shooda neveh made you be Dooynk."

    ReplyDelete
  169. Same reason Ultimate Warrior and Goldberg became stars - presence and charisma that can't be taught.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Cause he was the Master, and ruler of the world.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Sid was the first guy I saw use the Powerbomb, that is really all I needed to be a fan. His look and charisma were just icing.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I first saw Sid in 1990 as a Horseman. He was scary as fuck to the 10 year old me and I thought he was gonna destroy Sting at Halloween Havoc 90. I was confused when Barry came out as fake Sting and I thought Sid pinned the real Sting for the title. He definitely had a cool charisma about him. I like most males was glad to see him fuck up Shawn at SS96.

    ReplyDelete
  173. That crowd was INTO Sid bigtime.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Vader did that a lot. Didn't work out well for him.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Also - I would trust someone who made it abundantly clear that they only cared about the money ANY day over anyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I remember being excited to see Sid. He's one of a kind and definitely a worthy mid-tier Hall of Fame inductee. Dangerous? Who did he ever hurt but himself at the end of his career or Arn with the scissors?

    ReplyDelete
  177. when he came back for the Raw shots around Raw 1000 you could see in his face he was starting to look like old-haggard-southerner.

    ReplyDelete
  178. exactly.

"why > wouldn't < someone think that Sid had the potential to be a top draw?" seems a much better question to me.

    ReplyDelete
  179. not meant as an insult or anything, but liking something "in an ironic sense" always seemed weird to me.

    either I like it or I don't.

    ReplyDelete
  180. He got really old.

    ReplyDelete
  181. which is totally understable, especially considering where "the business" was going.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Probably because he's, y'know, main eventing the biggest wrestling show of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I just went and watched it out of curiosity. He's also super keyed into the fans. Totally working them. Probably gets less credit than he deserves for is abilities with the crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Hey I was 10 and I worshiped babyface HBK in 1996. All my buddies in 5th grade did, too. I'm thinking the 12-13 cutoff is more appropriate.

    ReplyDelete
  185. It was this way before the rumble too. Don't kid yourself, if reigns didn't exist they would be complaining about something else.

    ReplyDelete
  186. btw: that line from Michaels introducing him on a "Superstars" episode and referencing his name changes was great.

"You can call him "Justice", you can call him "Vicious", you can call him "Psycho"... but I call him SID!"

    ReplyDelete
  187. I thought Sid was a legit star during his Sid Justice phase. I was 12 years old, but even so, I thought he was the WWF Champion elect

    ReplyDelete
  188. I don't think he would - but only for the reason it might hurt him from making the most money in the future.

    ReplyDelete

Was a Brock vs. Punk re-match ever on the table for Wrestlemania 30? Or was it always Lesnar vs. Taker?

    ReplyDelete
  190. Brock is gonna flop around unmotivated and probably end things quick. If Brock is definitely leaving they should literally book the match to be Superman punch, spear, pin. It'd do more to make Reigns look like a beastslayer that completely squashed Brock than trying to have an epic battle with two guys who cant hold up their end.

    ReplyDelete
  191. How can you not respect the guy? Brock is one of a kind. With the way amateur wrestling is dying off and WWE's stranglehold on what's become "Sports Entertainment", we will probably NEVER AGAIN see someone as legit as Lesnar. He may not be the greatest on the mic, but his intensity is UNMATCHED when he's interested. If the bottom line is who I would pay money to see in a wrestling ring my top 3 today are Brock Lesnar, Brock Lesnar and Brock Lesnar.
It's just a shame we don't live in a parallel universe where Brock was given long programs with Caesaro, D Bry and Ziggler.

    ReplyDelete
  192. And then, backstage, Reigns would be given a head trauma test he could pass while texting Colt Cabana and tossed a Z-Pak of Antibiotics for the tumorous purple lump in the waistband of his tights.
