Random WM Questions

Good Morning Mr. Keith, for WM Weekend I have just some random questions while thinking about past events:

1. Michaels turned on Janetty not too long before Rumble 92, and they still feuded after their match at Rumble 93, so how come the appropriate blow-off wasn't at one of those years respective Manias?  Or is it the obvious answer of Janetty being unreliable to behave in time for the big show?

2.  Was someone planning a Papa Shango/Hogan program after WM 8 or was there a Harvey Wippleman connection that I can't remember for him coming to Sid's aid at WM8 and that was just supposed to be it?  Or was it Warrior bleeds-oil-from-hands angle the plan all along?

3. With Hogan/Andre being done with early on at the WM4, and knowing it would steal the show, why rob of us Savage/Steamboat II and go with Valentine instead?

Lastly, how do you feel as a fan of hockey, what my team, the Sabres are doing, with regards of the organization, not the players, tanking for the #1 or #2 draft pick in this years lottery?  I think its a result of the system the NHL has set up anyway, and its going to happen regardless of what team is aiming for last.  And, with all do respect, I really don't want Edmonton to win the lottery, they've wasted too many top picks.

....and fuck Arizona too!  Why is hockey even down there?

Thank you, good day, #ReignsoverGedo

1.  Yeah, Marty had some run-ins with the law and drugs, basically.  That was the general plan, however.

2.  Warrior-Shango was the plan and that’s how they decided to set it up.

3.  Because Vince is a petty, petty man.

It’s hard to really say an entire organization is tanking, but they’re certainly not trying very hard.  But then look at how bad the Oilers have been since 06, and they’ve been actively TRYING.  On the other side, I had actively accepted this as a rebuild season for the Canucks, and they’ve way overachieved, so getting a big draft pick isn’t necessarily a guarantee of success.

Comments

  1. The draft is so stacked this year that I can't blame the tankathon around the league. McDavid is almost a guaranteed superstar, Eichel is just a step or two behind, Strome and Hanifin would be solid #1 picks themselves in any other year, Marner is pretty good....even if teams miss out on McDavid/Eichel, any team will be satisfied with one of those other three guys as a consolation prize. God help McDavid if the Leafs win the draft lottery....the Toronto media
will put such enormous pressure on him from day one that it could ruin
    his career.

Looking at the NHL standings today, I was stunned that the Oilers are now only the third-worst team in hockey. Arizona is having a truly awful season. The bright side is that it might bring us one step closer to getting the Coyotes finally moved to a city that gives a crap.

  2. God forbid that anything entertaining would've come out of Wrestlemania 4. As it is, Savage/Valentine was still arguably the best match on the show....that and Savage/Dibiase were basically the only matches of worth on that entire 14-hour card.

  3. We have hockey in Arizona because we built them the arena and we don't want to be stuck with an empty building which is why the team stayed here, even when the league owned them. Also keep in mind that the Phoenix Metro area is very transient and people bring their out of state allegiances with them.

  4. "It’s hard to really say an entire organization is tanking"

It's never been more obvious that Scott doesn't watch the NBA.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Scott, you should tune in to see what teams in the NBA, NFL and MLB do.

    ReplyDelete
  6. My pipe dream is the Pens trading Malkin to whoever has the number 1 pick and getting McDavid.

    ReplyDelete
  7. The answer to the third question is all matches must be face vs heel. What if the crowd sided with steamboat?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Yeah Penguins have had it pretty tough over the last 30 years. Def deserve to get a generational player after all the bums they've had.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The tanking in the NBA is out of control. The lottery is clearly not working anymore. Watching the Lakers, Sixers, or Knicks is actively painful.

The worst are the Sixers. I can kind of understand the Knicks and Lakers; both are trying to completely remake their teams. The Sixers just keep on tanking with the foolish hope they end up with a big free agent or trade. It will take a while to undo that mess.

  10. I thought it was Warrior vs Sid as the plan until he quit in April after a failed steroid test??? Shango was the replacement feud and he was only used at the end of Mania because Vince had big plans for him.

    ReplyDelete
  11. See, I'm not positive the Knicks were tanking until they shut Carmelo down. Phil really thought this was how to build a good team and somehow ended up worse than the 76ers.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yeah but.. And I may remember wrong here, but hadn't they managed to cool off Steamboat ALOT since, say, the Survivor Series? The face hear felt more polite to him, for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Blasphemy! You forgot Bret smashing the trophy!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Marty literally attacked a police officer and got sentenced to 6 months house arrest in early 1992 and was fired by the WWF in march. They rehired him later that year but then he fucked up a 2nd Mania showdown with Shawn Michaels when he got fired again...only to be rehired in time for their spring showdowns over the IC title.

As an Oilers fan i'd be fine if the NHL adopted a true lottery system for all 14 Non-Playoff teams. Throw their logo on a bingo ball and pull em out one by one. First ball out = # 14th Overall pick and continue all the way down to # 1.

That'd be a hell of a show and tanking would be gone forever, but that also brings up the possibility of sentencing bad teams to be bad forever if they don't get lucky on lottery day.

    ReplyDelete
  15. He had said he assumed he was going to give Savage his win back, too.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Aren't the games poorly attended because the arena is out of the way and no one wants to go there?

    ReplyDelete
  17. You'd have to offer more than that

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nope, it's literally across the street from the University of Phoenix stadium where the Cardinals play.

They're both in the burbs but according to Google, only 12.5 miles from downtown Phoenix.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's part of it too. It's in Glendale, across the street from where the Cardinals play. It's a 15 minute drive from downtown Phoenix. The arena was supposed to be built on the Scottsdale/Tempe border, which is much more centralized and not a long drive to get to. But the county blundered on that deal.

  20. Depending on the team, I think swapping first rounders, Malkin, and a prospect would be enough.

  22. Nah, my team owns the Penguins but it's fucking selfish to want ANOTHER generational player. Mario and Sid not good enough? Add Jagr in his prime and Malkin and the other Staal kid, Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Malkin has a no trade clause and there's been reports over the years that he would never want out of Pittsburgh, especially to a bottom team, and that he would retire from the NHL if they tried to move him. Besides, take Malkin out and the Pens are fucked.

    ReplyDelete
  24. They really should have turned Marty heel at some point and made him a "heroin rocker."

    ReplyDelete
  25. Would have made a great 96 Shawn opponent!

  26. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 28, 2015 at 12:31 PM

They should have just payed Marty to job clean at Mania 9. You can always do the "broken man" redemption story arc where he comes back reinvested and motivated for the spring feud.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 28, 2015 at 12:36 PM

They should have trimmed a round off that tournament.

    Macho over Steamboat
    Hammer over Duggan
    Dibiase over BamBam
    Hogan over Andre

    Macho over Hammer
    Dibiase over Hogan (screwjob)

    Macho over Dibiase

The rest of the roster could have been in actual feuds and/or involved in the battle royale

    ReplyDelete
  28. Is still have Hogan-Andre go double dq in that scenario. It would give Dibiase an easier path than Savage.

  29. I like the ASCII effects!

  30. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 28, 2015 at 1:37 PM

Yeah, that works well too. Stacking the deck against Macho got the crowd even more behind him.

Is Macho Man the greatest Wrestlemania performer ever?

2: Throwaway fun with George Steele
    3: All-time classic with Steamboat
4: Only redeeming quality of the Title Tournament
    5: MegaPowers Explode match
6: Wasted opportunity, with a mixed tag with Dusty
    7: All-time classic with Warrior
    8: Classic with Flair
    10: OK brawl with Crush

With his performances at Wrestlemanias 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, doesn't Macho Man have to be considered one of the top 3 or so Wrestlemania performers ever? HBK, Cena are obviously top of the list as well.

  33. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 28, 2015 at 1:50 PM

Piper vs. Savage should have happened at Wrestlemania 6. Dusty vs. Rude instead.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I don't think you can call them generational players if you have two on the same team.

  35. YankeesHoganTripleHFanMarch 28, 2015 at 2:20 PM

So true. Can you imagine the promos?

  36. Jannetty was supposed to face Shawn at WM8 before he was fired. There's a singles match of his on your use

  37. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 28, 2015 at 2:24 PM

So much coke. Also, just make it the wildest brawl they could come up with. All over the arena, at a time that never happened in WWF.

Any truth to the rumor that it would have been a cocaine on a pole match?

If Hulk sticks around in '92, do we get Flair-Hogan at SummerSlam in Wembley? Triple main of Savage-Warrior, Hogan-Flair, and Bret-Bulldog?

    ReplyDelete
  40. That description of the Sixers sounds a lot like the Knicks prior to this year.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I even enjoyed the hell out of the mixed tag.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Random SummerSlam Question: How awesome was the angle leading up to the SS98 ladder match where the Nation held Chyna while the Rock demeaned her and acted like he was about to kiss her, only to follow it with, "On second thought, there's no way, and the Rock means no way, he'd ever kiss a piece of trash like you."? Like on a scale of 10-10? Siccing Henry on her, HHH breaking it up and dropping my pick for his best-delivered line ever, "Rock, at SummerSlam your role is gonna be real simple... You... are gonna be... my bitch." It would have been a really trite line even a year or two later, but for the tone of the time it was still relatively edgy but didn't feel cheap, it just felt like HHH using profanity out of actual anger and emotion, whereas for most of his career to that point it was for cheap sophomoric heat. God that feud ruled.

I think Hogan-Andre and Hogan-Savage are the best hero/villain "angles" in WWF/WWE history probably, but Rock vs HHH has to be at least a top contender for the best hero/villain (regardless of who was the hero or the villain) career rivalry in wrestling history. (Flair/Steamboat? Flair/Rhodes?) At least out of ones that were on nationally available broadcasts. I don't know if "Dancin'" Stu Watson and Fez Barker had a more epic four-decade feud in NWA Des Moines or something.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey wait, did so many NXT guys get cornball names because they're supposed to be like "territory" wrestlers?

    ReplyDelete
  44. It wasn't just pro-Steamboat sentiment, but you don't want to remind the crowd of what an awful human being their soon-to-be champion was. No risk of that with Valentine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sure you can. It doesn't have to take a generation to have a generational player. A generational player is a player that "comes once in a generation". It's a vague term. Fuck Pittsburgh. And fuck Rothlisburger too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good point. I'll buy that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Um no. By definition, you can't have two once in a generation in the same generation.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Only if it went on first, a bag of cocaine backstage wouldn't last a three hour show.

    ReplyDelete
  49. How did Jannetty keep getting brought back? I mean, he was good and all but not really give him 5 chances good.

    ReplyDelete
  50. A generational player, to me, is a player that is immediately one of the top 10 best players in the league, wins the championship within a few seasons and keeps his team at the top of the league for 10-15 seasons. This defintion does not require one player per generation, it could be several.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well the chances kept getting smaller, post Shawn/Razor/123 Kid days.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yep, that would have been a classic, old school Survivor Series match on a show that badly needed them. That said, I think Crush *was* a member of LOD for a split second after Summerslam 92 when Hawk left and Animal stayed around before thinking better of it (I sorta remember seeing a picture of Animal and Crush teaming up at a house taping in PWI Weekly of all places in Sept. 1992. Or was I hallucinating?)

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's how I remember it, too. Sid was cutting promos on Warrior for the few post-WM Superstars episodes he appeared on before getting fired in late-April. And I distinctly remember McMahon and Henning hyping an Undertaker-Shango feud when either guy was involved in a squash. I wonder if the voodoo/puking angle was originally scheduled for Taker? They put Taker in a pretty random feud with Berzerker in late spring, which was a pretty big come down. Berzerker was always pretty much a lower card afterthought and not the first guy I'd pick to get Taker's face run off to a big start.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah I never got that. Especially as a mark kid who didn't understand why this dude showed up once a year to get his ass beat and disappear

    ReplyDelete
  55. It would be like the IC title has been lately, everyone stealing it from each other till they have to have a multi man match.

    ReplyDelete
  56. "You're telling me Rhodes only weighs 200? Cause I know damn well Sapphire weighs two and a half. 565 I might buy. But no 465!"

    ReplyDelete
  57. I remember that promo. And that was the one that turned my brother and I into Rock fans.

    ReplyDelete
  58. love the crowd reaction of a stunned silence/groan when Valentine goes over Steamboat

two weeks before during Superstars Steamboat did a insert promo hyping the possible "Savage Steamboat 2" just to be an extra jerk about it

then Hogan is eliminated in his first match and the crowd grumbles as they all talk to each other all basically saying "well this sucks"

    ReplyDelete
  59. WM7 Macho King is the greatest ring attire of all time

    ReplyDelete
  60. the original plan of Dibiase winning over an exhausted Hogan in the finals after paying off One Man Gang to get a bye would have been fun...

    ReplyDelete
  61. That tournament killed my 'markdom' for good, as I found I could reliably predict every second match, given that I knew that a heel would fight a face and vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Probably pat patterson. He really liked them as workers and Bret thinks he might have had a crush on them

    ReplyDelete
  63. On savages last dvd they had a match and savage was awesome piper barely sold shit but it Def was a ppv effort from savage.

Awesome! I've never seen them in a match until the WCW years when no one cared in the least

  65. Fat, Ugly Inner-City SweathogMarch 30, 2015 at 9:32 AM

Oh absolutely. Sets the "heel winning" precedence early in Wrestlemania's history too. Dibiase-Savage at 'SummerSlam' I guess, with Macho turning heel soon after and building to the MegaPowers match at WM5

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh you'll love this match savage was channeling ric flair and probably was snorting coke in the back he's flying all over
