(Apologies for not getting the remaining days of WM weekend out sooner. We've both been engulfed in work and life and attending this stuff, adding in the aforementioned, has left us a bit fatigued...more to come!)
Friday was a little different.
We
left work and came rushing over, only to find that the gates hadn't
opened yet...and there was a line, about a mile long, to get in, with
that classic "zig-zag" format you see in a line at Disneyland.
Luckily, we got in fairly quickly...and immediately got in the first signing line we saw.
It
was rumored that Dolph Ziggler was signing at the station we stopped
at. There was another rumor going around that Paige was supposed to be
here again tonight and that she'd be at the station next door...Danielle
really wanted to get her Paige T-shirt signed.
We
waited for a few minutes to see who would end up where. When the first
Superstars appeared, the crowd cheered...and they were headed for a
booth across from us. It was Erick Rowan and Sin Cara.
Ok...we
got Sin Cara yesterday. Rowan isn't totally somebody we want to
meet...we decided to stay in our line. Then, more cheers next to us --
and out came Natalya. I was a bit bummed. Then her Dad, Jim, showed up.
Man...
I asked Danielle if she wanted to move. She said, "No. Let's see who we get."
Suddenly, our line began to cheer...and out popped...
Dolph Ziggler.
Let
me tell you something about Ziggler. The dude was performing for the
entire line. Just like Paige, he played to the crowd and toed the line
between cocky and incredibly charming. He gets up from his seat and
says, "Sorry...I'm done. I have no time for ANY of you. See ya'." He was
only kidding: he left to go sign for the disabled guest line.
At
one point, he came back from the empty disabled guest line, stopped to
take pictures with the couple of people near the immediate area, signed
their stuff real quick, then rolled his eyes at everyone else as they begged him to sign their stuff, too. With a hair flip, he went back to tend to the regular line.
When we got there, I asked if he would sign for our mutual friend, Tania, who couldn't make it out.
I don't know if it was the volume in the place or if Friday fatigue was hitting me...I spelled her name wrong. Ziggler could have just signed her name, as was spelled to him...but he notices and says, "Wait...T, A, N, A, I?! That's 'Tawn-ay', bro! That's not how you spell that. I don't even know your friend and I know how she spells her name!"
So, we had some laughs and Ziggler says, "Let me spell it again..." So, he writes over
the original spelling, then realizes that you can see a "T", followed
by some scribbling. He puzzles over it and asks, "I think that looks
like 'TANIA'...you think she'd be able to tell? I mean, maybe if I
scribble all fancy and professional-looking, she'll think it says, 'TANIA'...right?" And we just laughed. He was just a great guy.
He shook our hands and we got our photo with him.
After this, we grabbed some quick food and drink and headed out to see what else we could see.
Turns out, some pretty good Superstars were signing that night.
Kane...who
didn't look happy to be there at all. Kinda strange. Maybe he was
trying to be the "Corporate" character...but I took quite a few photos
from a few rounds of fans and he didn't smile once.
A strange choice to sign: The Bogeyman...
And he'd actually sign with Hornswoggle:
After
that, I checked my WrestleMania App (an attendant told me it would give
me signing schedules...huzzah!) and found out that JBL and Jerry Lawler
were signing...so we went to take a pic with them.
Danielle
and I stopped by the Elimination Chamber to take a couple pictures of
Stardust and Miz-dow. One of the funniest things was watching Stardust
freak out and shriek before he would hug the person getting into the
ring with them.
We
were just in time to watch a Q&A session with Howard Finkel and
Booker T in the NXT ring. NXT was hosting some "house shows" all Axxess
weekend, so things like this were awesome to watch.
In
the Q&A, Booker praised former manager, Sherri Martel, and said
that he misses her each and every day. When a fan asked if Harlem Heat
would ever get back together, Booker's response was, "In this business, I
always have one response: never say never."
We stayed around a bit to do the Gratuitous WrestleMania Sign Point...
We made one last trip to the museum as we'd heard that they had added the Andre trophy...
We visited a couple of our favorite wrestlers...
We invaded a Triple H signing and took some pics of him...
And
we closed the night out by watching a really fun match between Heath
Slater and Curtis Axel, in which Axel took bump after bump and sold
everything Slater had -- then came back like Hulk Hogan. It was truly
great, crowd-pleasing stuff that the crowd around us loved.
Last, but not least, caught this excellent shot of Goldust being interviewed by our local media...
Stay tuned for Part 3...
Er...that's it.
IFRST!
ReplyDeleteDon't know if he meant the middle specifically, I would imagine he's referring to it not being a separate match. Could be totally wrong, though. If that was the question yes, it was even announced as being changed to a triple threat match by Lillian (it is still Lillian, right?). Definitely a nice change, as the "cash in right after the match" is getting so predictable.
ReplyDeleteHHH's entrance was so abysmal it was almost dream like. Things are absolutely nonsensical, and in a normal state of conscious you'd realize in ten seconds this couldn't be really happening... but you're dreaming so you don't. Are we supposed to believe Arnold is in fact a cyborg? Fuck the nWo, where was Robocop when Sting needed him?
ReplyDeleteCheap shot, and I'm sure I'm not the first though I haven't heard it yet, but so hard to resist...
The fact that the match was as good as it was, and was done the way it was, makes the preceding months all the more frustrating, because there was a REALLY good story leading up to this match that was buried under all the shit they did. Wouldn't have even needed any more appearances from Lesnar. Hell, Lesnar's absence would've added to it. That and the Bryan match were the only things done well, it's his interactions with literally everyone else that went wrong. Roman Reigns is a guy who came into the main roster in very late 2012 and was completely and utterly DOMINANT... as the heavy in a trio that worked impossibly well together. When the trio broke up, they were at the top of the business. Reigns has no reason to think he's anything other than hot shit. He kicks ass all the way until he gets hurt, but he comes back and wins a title shot at THE wrestling event. Wrestle Fucking Mania. A show at which he has NEVER lost. He knows Brock Lesnar is a monster, but he'll out monster the monster while others are quietly devoured. He shatters Big Show's hand (Superman punch colliding with Show's WMD punch, try to tell me that wouldn't be an amazing visual), he spears Kane in half. He has a hard fought match with another great, determined warrior in Daniel Bryan, and still comes out on top. Roman Reigns has, through genuine accomplishment, built himself up in his head as the guy who will take down Brock Lesnar.
ReplyDeleteAnd then he doesn't. Because he's never encountered anyone like Brock Lesnar, because there ISN'T anyone like Brock Lesnar. He assumes because he's taken out giants like Big Show and Kane, that he can take out Brock Lesnar, another giant. But Lesnar isn't just a giant or a monster. Brock Lesnar is a walking extinction event. Reigns has not felt that kind of power, so he didn't know. And that's what did him in. Hell, he could've done a one-man double turn in the past three months. Start out as a face with the Rumble win (booked 100% differently), get cocky in the coming months, JUST enough to get booed against fan favorites like Bryan and Lesnar, and then have Lesnar beat all the cockiness out of him until the serious, ass-kicking warrior that we came to know and love was all that was left, and when THAT Roman Reigns went down fighting, he'd be a hotter face than he'd ever been.
I don't know why, maybe I have the up-too-late giggles, but I have stop-start laughing at this comment at least three times. :) I think the avatar adds to it.
ReplyDeleteThat would be insanely tricky to work right, not to mention having the benefit of hindsight, but it would be super awesome, no doubt. The only real issue would be the superman punch destroying the WMD - making that look right would be super tricky, even if it sounds simple in theory. They'd have one shot at it, and it would likely look unbelievably silly and kill suspension of disbelief. That's a minor point in the grand scheme, though. I'd definitely be down for this story, or one similar, it'd be great!
ReplyDeleteNot only that but in this one instance, waiting to fight the winner wouldn't have really given Seth an advantage as it looked certain to be Brock who beat him at the Rumble having taken far more punishment then. Sneaking in mid-match meant he became the first guy to beat a tired loser than a tired winner for the belt, which makes Rollins look even more the devious genius he is portrayed as. Well, except for that moronic storyline where he assumed he could trust Orton.
ReplyDeleteI agree that anything other than doing the Superman/WMD collision spot on perfect would either be a comical whiff or look like a douchey fist-bump, just trying to think of different ways to make someone look badass against Big Show other than being able to pick him up. Any port in a storm, ya know?
ReplyDeleteIf I had something free to give, I'd give it to you, Zan. :)
ReplyDeleteBreaking news. The sun has been released. WWE wish him well with his future endeavours.
ReplyDeleteNeat
ReplyDeleteI'm totally ok with Sting losing here, if it was 10 years ago not so much though. I'm not ok with Cena getting booed out of the building when they have him fighting a freaking evil Russian. Please turn Cena.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else shocked to see blood in the main event? All looked like it was gotten hardway but regardless I thought it really helped the match.
ReplyDeleteVia satellite eliminates the travel. I'm looking forward to his return to the Daily Show!
ReplyDeleteIf Brock headbutting the ringpost and bleeding WASN'T an accident, then it was the best bladejob I've ever seen. Seriously, he started gushing immediately.
ReplyDeleteTo quote Scott Keith after the hologram ending to Hell in a Cell 2014...
ReplyDelete"... the ending out of left field totally ruined all the good will that the entertaining brawl had built up. Since WWE is all about comparing themselves to other, better, pop culture, this was like if you were watching a dramatic cop movie like Heat and just as the movie is building to the climactic fight between Deniro and Pacino, suddenly the smoke monster from Lost appears and magically knocks out Pacino so that Deniro can shoot him in the head and get away."
I understand that this wasn't anywhere to stupidness of that event but I'm suprised that more people aren't angry that an awesome world title match ended in such a screwy fashion. It's the main event of Wrestlemania for God's sake - couldn't somebody have actually won the match we've been building up to since January before the inevitable and entirely predictable cash-in?
I enjoyed this show a lot more than I thought I would. Like most, I wasn't a huge fan of the Undertaker vs. Bray match. I thought the Sting/HHH match was a lot of fun. I sort of thought Sting would win going in, but as they kept playing up the WCW vs. WWE angle, I knew there was no chance of it happening. I thought the main event was good. I had really low expectations for it, but it looked like they were just beating each other to death and the "Roman just won't quit" story line was slowly winning me over.
ReplyDeleteAfter Shawn came in, I was hoping the Flair would run down to help Sting and turn on him one last time for old times sake.
ReplyDeleteSo Sports Center tweeted out the results of the main event last night. Is wrestling doing better in mainstream than we realize? Brock was all over ESPN the past week and now with Rousey getting involved....

HOLY SHIT what a WrestleMania.
ReplyDeleteLadder Match was good fun. Rollins/Orton was really good with a legendary finish, I liked the hooplah with Rusev and Cena. Match was *** like Scott said. The Rock segment would have been classic on Raw but went a little long with a bit of a lame payoff.
I probably liked Taker/Bray more than most but was disappointed in the finish. Sting/HHH was precisely 8,000 times better than it had any right to be. I was loving the whole match. Disappointed Sting lost but they gave a hell of a show.
And the main event. Roman earned my respect in that match. ***** match and I will fight you Ron Burgundy style if you disagree. They had me rooting for Roman by the end. The finish was inventive and fantastic.
I just saw highlights of the main event on Sportscenter and it wasn't played for laughs...
ReplyDeleteNo I'm totally fine with the finish. I loved it.
ReplyDeleteTo enjoy any of that entire spectacle you pretty much had to put any sense of logic on hold (even more so than usual). I had it at -* wrestlecrap.
ReplyDeleteI honestly couldn't see it ending any other way. Reigns wins and we get a face with the belt booed out of the ring. Lesnar wins and we had a mostly one sided main event with no real drama.
ReplyDeleteDuane Gill is ready for his title shot
ReplyDeleteWho better to represent USA vs USSR in 2015?
ReplyDeleteNo mention of Stardust aping Mr. Sinister's look?
ReplyDeleteThis looks cool, but quick question...how tall/short is Danielle?
ReplyDeletetold ya'll niggas that the main would break ****
ReplyDeleteI actually think the over the top silliness of NWO vs DX was the right way to go. They're all old, way past their prime. It was two old gangs getting together to mix it up one last time. I'm fine with it.
ReplyDeleteFuck him, he can't work
ReplyDeleteI think the legitimacy of ESPN has fallen to the level of WWE more than anything good WWE has done or is doing
ReplyDeleteAlso the main event is an example of when blood can be highly beneficial in wrestling. Brock hitting the post and bleeding gave so much more impact to the moment where Brock was FINALLY staggered just a little bit. And Roman had managed to take a pound of flesh from the monster.
ReplyDeleteDon't feed the troll.
ReplyDeleteThe finish to Orton/Rollins.
ReplyDeleteAfter first viewing, this Wrestlemania reminds me of 26. Solid throughout but not much I would want to watch a second time.
ReplyDeleteDragged in the middle, but a really enjoyable show with an all time great ending. The only thing that really pissed me off all night was the Big Show, everything else was fine. Perhaps I should have more faith in WWE pulling things off in the future!
ReplyDeleteBurt! Where were you in the live thread!
ReplyDeleteWho are you?
ReplyDeleteThey kept selling the surprising fact that Big Show had never won a battle royal, so I was fine with it (eye-rolling "Wrestlemania moment" fabricating with the trophy notwithstanding).
ReplyDeleteI hate live threads lol but I couldn't watch the show live anyways and watched the repeat showing.
ReplyDeleteJust keeping it warm for Cena. He will have it back by summerslam.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this. They were booked into the ultimate corner.
ReplyDeleteThe show needed more dancing negroes.
ReplyDeleteMizdow looks like such a stupid asshole for refusing to cooperate with The Miz and than trying to fight Show anyway. Miz would be totally justified firing him.
ReplyDeleteRename truth and Kofi to step and fetchit and you've got something. They can play the knockout game on unsuspecting white wrestlers.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. It might have worked better if they got some WCW guys like DDP, Flair and Booker T out instead of the nWo, but I could understand them wanting to go with a DX/nWo showdown since they always paint them as the 2 biggest opposing forces in the MNW.
ReplyDeleteHe totally should have ganged up on Show then turned on Miz
ReplyDeleteI know it's probably been said before, and answered. But I was always under the impression you COULDN'T cash in during a match.
ReplyDeleteIf they dump Show and Mizdow refused to eliminate himself that's great.
ReplyDeleteMiz looks like the logical good guy the way they did it.
Still it was the preshow so whatever.
I think it's just never been mentioned. I can't ever recall them saying you can't do it. I don't think I've ever heard any restrictions on it, it's just you wouldn't expect anyone to do it. Really, Seth should have waited until one man was completely out of it to cash in, it was somewhat of an unneccessary risk.
ReplyDeleteI'm not questioning Rollins cashing-in, although I do find it to be a fairly overused and cheap booking tool. I just think that he should have cashed on on the winner of the match rather than having the match become a triple threat.
ReplyDelete"As long as you are an American who votes Republican..." except for the full Barack Obama quote and the FDR spot.
ReplyDeleteAye, it doesn't count. When we rewatch all the shows nobody bothers with the preshows as well
ReplyDeleteAs far as complaining, Mizdow's a stupid hill to die on.
ReplyDeleteWho is the best WCW wrestler to never wtestle in WWE?
ReplyDeleteAye. The main show more than delivered, and not just in a better than low expectations kinda way. Big thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteDoes AJ Styles count?
ReplyDeleteTank Abbott
ReplyDeleteTully Blanchard. Wrestled in WWF not WWE.
ReplyDeleteAlex W
ReplyDeleteAlready watched that main event 3 times. So great. It was tremendous before the cash-in. Add in the cash-in and Rollins comes out looking like the weaseliest rat fuck in the world. Also has 3 instant challengers.
ReplyDeleteJFK was in there too
ReplyDeleteAnother match, another ***1/2+ match.
ReplyDeleteAll hail The Reigns Train!
CHOO-CHOO!!!
Yeah, but Money in the Bank is part of the established rules of wrestling, like running the ropes and blind referees. It works fine in that context.
ReplyDeleteIt's gotta be Sting? *represses memories*
ReplyDeleteDid he wrestle in WCW? I don't know.
ReplyDeleteI would guess Great Muta.
The match told such a great story and was booked so well that I was totally rooting for Roman by the end. I stood up when he slammed Brock into the post and drew blood.
ReplyDeleteEither end game jobber or end game developmental I think
ReplyDeleteNothing new. He looked like a stupid asshole being the only MitB holder to get pinned after cashing in.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been a nice wink at the old time fans.
ReplyDeleteThat's what i thought originally, but if Rollins knows he can't beat Lesnar, then his next best option is to pin Lesnar's opponent mid-match.
ReplyDeleteGod dammit, where are all the backstage stories already? Did they deliberately work the Main Event stiff? When was the decision to put the title on Rollins made? Was the Rock segment overlong to ensure it got dark? Or am I looking at the wrong news sites?
ReplyDeletehe was on their main roster right at the end, had a part in the Cruiserweight Tag Title tournament.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I write the Sporting News stories and that's why I post links here.
ReplyDeleteAh alright. I thought it had been said as one of the parameters. Either way they can make their own rules as they go along. Whatever it's all good then.
ReplyDeleteI live on the West Coast and I knew for damn sure it wasn't gonna be dark for Bray/Taker.
ReplyDeleteI'm still pissed at the Obsrver site for spoiling HHH/Sting in their ongoing live report. Bloody dirt sites.
ReplyDeleteCook em up in a little bacon grease and balsamic vinegar...mmmmm
ReplyDeleteRoad Block
ReplyDeleteI thought JBL was pretty funny last night. When he yelled 'dammit they are human beings' at Orton for DDTing the two bozos that come out with Rollins and then 'you two can be witnesses when I call the police' over RR attacking Stephanie.
ReplyDeleteI'm proud to have been openly cheering for him in the live thread!
ReplyDeleteLate addition: Stephanie was making those same eyes at Rock and had been making them at Sting last week.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm guessing she cashed in and made that a Triple Threat.
I was wondering if he did that on purpose as an in joke.
ReplyDeleteTo counter Triple H's Terminator, Sting should have brought out RoboCop.
ReplyDeleteOr a Dalek.
ReplyDeleteI started out rooting for Brock but they gradually won me over. I was like the Russian Crowd in Rocky IV
ReplyDeleteDaily Update Thread at 9am
ReplyDeleteHe's a bad mofo, that Lanny Pofo.
ReplyDeleteI have to laugh at myself because I called someone stupid for saying the crowd would Attack Roman on his way to the ring because a few times it did actually look like an idiot or two tried to get too familiar.
ReplyDeleteAbout that...
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1h3JCirtuU
The crowd definitely needs to do the baseball "K" thing with Brock's suplexes except using Brock faces. It would have been epic seeing 16 or so of those hanging off a barricade when he pummeled Cena.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the final count for Roman? He had to have taken nearly 16.
ReplyDeleteSlept on it and my opinion still stands, if you didn't like this show you're nuts. If it were 3 hours we're looking at one of the best wrestling shows ever, however I have to dock a few points for an hour of fluff but still this is exactly the kind of show we've been crying for them to deliver for 8-9 months now. Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteIn fairness, if you are looking for good + rousing rhetoric speeches versus the Soviets Reagan gives you way more sound bites than other presidents, largely because that is post-detente.
ReplyDeleteVince Russo.
ReplyDeleteThis show was way better than I thought it would be, but maybe that's because I went in with such low expectations. However, if the main event and cash in didn't deliver, I think we'd be looking at this show a lot less positively.
ReplyDeletePros:
1) Putting the US and IC titles on two of your biggest names might finally mean they're serious about building these titles back up.
2) The Curbstomp into the RKO was such a good finish. Orton going over didn't make sense at first, but now with Rollins as champ Orton is now one of 3 viable challengers for the title which is great.
3) Rusev's entrance was glorious and I fully support whatever push he gets going forward.
4) While nothing special compared to other matches, the ladder match delivered.
5) HHH-Sting was just nostalgic overbooked fun and the finish doesn't really matter either way
6) That main event - if the plan was to get the crowd to respect Reigns by having him take a serious beating then I'd say it worked, and they also got out of the corner they booked themselves into. Well done.
Cons:
1) The women's tag accomplished nothing and was still pretty lousy compared to the women's matches in NXT
2) Undertaker looked much better and the match was fine, but what the hell do you do with Wyatt now? Might be time for him to take a few months as that character is DOA.
3) With all the concern over head shots and safety, the ladder match would have been fine without an unprotected powerbomb onto a ladder, no matter how gimmicked the ladder was.
4) Big Show again? Really?? What the fuck? I know it was just a jobber battle royal but why are they so concerned with booking him so strong in 2015? Also, the Miz/Sandow booking was all wrong. Miz looked like a courageous face ready to charge at Big Show but Sandow pussed out.
5) Again, Steph is the strongest heel in the company not named Lesnar. If you can't have Ronda do an actual spot, then don't book Steph to act like such a badass. Or have an actual full timer be the one to take Steph out. At least HHH is willing to show some ass. That whole segment didn't do much for me.
You know what trick was missed? Someone didn't have a giant sign of the black guy from Wrestlemania XXX with his eyes popping out after Undertaker's loss. Would have been good to hold it up for the shock result at the end. Unless I missed it in the crowd?
ReplyDeleteOr Linda Hamilton.
ReplyDeleteW...T...F?
ReplyDeleteYeah but Daleks wouldn't have been able to get up the ring steps
ReplyDeleteThat Cena stunner sequence was bad ass!
ReplyDeletewhich makes me think if Db wrestled Brock he couldnt take those suplexes or he'd be in a wheel chair afterwards...
ReplyDeleteDisco Inferno!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Bobby Eaton
ReplyDeleteI just think it was an opportunity missed in terms of the story of the match. Reigns shows guts but ultimately gets killed by the most dominant champion ever. Reigns gets destroyed but ultimately fights back to win against the odds.
ReplyDeleteTHEN Rollins cashes in and we tune in to Raw to see what happens next.
I suppose I don't understand this "booking themselves in to corner" line of thinking. What exactly is Reigns being protected for? This is the biggest show of the year! I think it's ok if somebody loses in the main event.
Ultimately in sports, which pro-wrestling seeks to simulate, guys winning/losing is what matters most. This match was great because it really did feel like a big time sports match with so much on the line. I just don't think that was a good pay off for the whole attraction.
I wish I could have muted JBL too. The shitty commentary might have ruined the entire show for me had it not been for the main being my favourite WWE match in years.
ReplyDeleteUnless that DB standee is horribly out of proportion I think the medical term would be "short".
ReplyDeleteLol my mom always told me it was petite though that was probably to make me feel better.
ReplyDeleteMatt are you going to recap the show or just Scott?
ReplyDeleteMatt has a Hall of Fame, Wrestlemania and (of course after we see it tonight) RAW to post.
ReplyDeleteLol Tania would RKO us both if he gave you that.

Haha...I just noticed you standing next to the DB cutout and I thought Paige was standing on one of those phone books they used to get Andre to stand on so he looked that much bigger than Vince.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's about time someone used a phone book for something useful.
ReplyDeleteI love JBL's forced half-smile. He looks exactly as uncomfortable as most wanna-be politicians do when they have to do meet and greets and be nice to people.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he was kinda meh...King was happy to see everyone.
ReplyDeleteI might actually recap WM in the report. It might take some time, but I'll get to it.
ReplyDeleteIn that picture of Slater choking Axel on the ropes, Finkel at ringside is either really excited or yawning, I can't tell which.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he was just wishing he could still soap down rookie male wrestlers and bully
ReplyDeleteHe was checking his cell at ringside at one point. I wanted to take a pic but I didn't wanna get him in trouble if somebody saw it.
ReplyDelete
