Vince and the Hall of Fame

Hello!

Have been going back and watching all of the old HOF ceremonies on the Network. Once thing I noticed is that during the early modern ceremonies ('04 on), almost every inductee takes the time to thank Vince and the McMahon family.

Then, after the first year or two, no one even mentions Vince, let alone thanks him in their speeches. It's actually somewhat distracting after a while. We've heard guys like Shawn Michaels reference this in their HOF appearances, but what gives? Why does Vince get the Vol
d
emort treatment at his own HOF?

Probably just a weird Vince-ism, and the same reasoning as why he doesn't want to be inducted into his own Hall of Fame.

  1. You know what doesn't get enough love? Hall's sleeveless Canadian tuxedo when he showed up on Nitro. Let's be honest- you have to be one bad ass dude to rock that look.

I don't know about that. As easy and fun as it is to "You have to see Big Show in person" he is dramatically bigger.

The problem with using Sheamus or Harper is you have them plus Barrett, Rowan, Ryback and probably three other guys I'm forgetting that are all that size.

It's hard to create that kind of feeling on a guy when there are six other guys all the same size.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I also think being able to handle Jordan, Shaq, and Kobe is a major skill. And even Phil could not maintain Shaq and Kobe, although Shaq and Kobe were together for 8 years already before Shaq got traded to Miami.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Watched "42" last night, really good movie but it amuses me that a movie like "Once" can get slapped with an "R" for three uses of "fuck" but "42" gets a PG-13 despite more n-bombs than the entire run of Chappelle's Show

    ReplyDelete
  88. I was watching Blazing Saddles, no way that movie is made today.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sure, but if the fans don't want to see Big Show or Kane (or imaginary "replacement giant" that is being forced in there for the sake of having a giant) and don't buy them as big threats or stars, then who gives a fuck how tall they actually are?

Over is over is over. Big SHow being 100 feet tall doesn't matter because fans don't want to see him and don't react to him. So again, his giantness becomes worthless. if they pop for Sheamus (or Wade or Harper or whoever) and but them as crazy threats based on booking, then your babyfaces would still get way more out of beating those guys than the unover giants.

And I'd say that you're wayyyy overestimating the importance of giants across WWF history. Yes, Andre of course. But did Hogan really set the world on fire feuding with Bundy or various other giant fat guys, in comparison to the business he did with Piper, Ordndorff, Savage etc?

And what "giants" were money stars in the Attitude Era? Big Show meant less than shit during the AUstin & Rock babyface runs, and it's not like either had a huge money program with Kane either.

And Diesel was a huge fucking flop.

So again, you don't "need" to fill the role of giant if the talent just isn't there.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Right? I mean, what a clear cut springboard to stardom beating 29 other people at Wrestlemania and looking really impressive at the end. Only an idiot would have the winner do a bunch of PPV jobs to everybody and their brother immediately after, amiright?

    ReplyDelete
  137. Bossman had a better cardio and could work, that HOSS was on the roll in his Heenan feud.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Hey dude! I know he was on a lot of drugs which might explain that. I can only cede to the author who we saw at a talk a few years ago, and I nearly jumped out of my chair and cheered when he backed up my interpretation in criticising the screenplay. I don't know, I guess it's open to intrepretation, but certain scenes in the movie don't make sense. Like when he goes to see Paul's apartment and the body's been cleaned up (or not obviously) and the woman gives him this death stare that she knows he's trouble. In the book it's because she knows he was responsible for the body they cleaned up and covered up to resell the apartment without a fuss, in the movie it's just... weird.

There's the big reveal at the end of the movie where Bateman is told that Paul couldn't possibly be dead because the guy he's confessing to just had dinner with him the other night, but that just ties into everyone confusing everyone with everyone else. It wasn't Paul he had dinner with, just like Bateman's alibi for the night of his murder (that someone had seen him at some party) was also incorrect. Bateman tries to confess and society is so fucked that he still gets away with it. His confession has meant nothing. :/

  140. If it wasn't for the legal issues, I still think they could have done a pseudo-WWF promotion like they were doing. To think if it wasn't WCW - you could of had a nWo with Hall, Nash, A heel Hogan, a heel Luger, a heel Jarrett, Diabise and Virgil/Vincent, and Syxx with hints of Bulldog and Bret in 1996 - it would be unstopable. But instead it became Hogan's stable and then Nash and Hall started to phone it all in.

  141. If there's anything Vince McMahon is known for, it's his humility.

    ReplyDelete
  142. He always did, they were just needlessly complicated and often fell apart before they could reach their end point. For a more recent example look at the formation of IMMORTAL in TNA. That was some awful, dumb long-term planning, but it was still something that stretched beyond a month.

    ReplyDelete
  143. I thought the story with Savage joining was that the nWo was using Liz as a bargaining chip to neutralize one of their biggest enemies? In that sense, it made sense and was kind of cool.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Yup. And Giant joining made sense to me too -- he was a young, impressionable guy who was lured by the promises of fame and fortune from Bischoff (secretly) and the too-cool-for-school nWo (openly). Plus, if you can't beat 'em...

    ReplyDelete
  145. Feud with Ahmed over the summer, and maybe taking the I-C Title at the IYH before Summerslam so he can lose to Ahmed by count or DQ to Ahmed at Summerslam which lets Ahmed "win" the feud and move onto the main event while Hunter still holds onto the belt and runs with it through the fall until Mero unseats him.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Honestly, I've ben doing a chronological watch of WWF and WCW on the network, and outside the Steamboat matches, I have yet to encounter what I'd call a good Jake match (I'm in the middle of 87).

    ReplyDelete
  150. A friend of my parents gave me a copy of the Warrior comic as a present one year. It was the Santa rape special edition. I think I was like 10 or 11 at that point. My mind still can't fully process what was going on in that issue.

  151. Are you crazy? It made a TON of money through 97 (and 98) but it should have ended after sting defeated hogan at starcade 97. That chase through the year made the promotion the hottest company in a decade

    ReplyDelete
  152. Well they turned The Rock in 97 when Rocky Maivia just sucked. Then he was nearly face during the Summer of 98 after Summer Slam and then they turned him heel again at the Survivor Series. Then he was face in 99 until 2002 and in 2003 he was heel again. Ok, after this, they kept him face, but when he only appears only once in a while, it istn't a big problem, but when you have to see someone every week and on every ppv you have to change IMO rather sooner than later.

  157. But how can you blame a concept like a tournament, when you book someone like Mabel against Savio Vega in the final match? I mean, I could have said that before, that King Mabel will be the biggest flop of them all. It wasn't the fault of the KOTR concept, that they booked Mabel as the winner. They could have chosen someone else.

And if Austin for example wouldn't have been KOTR winner, he could have had the same feud with Bret Hart and the Hart Foundation and later DX. It wouldn't have changed anything.

  158. Oh how I love the '04 Hall of Fame ceremony. The last time it had an exclusive, banquet dinner feel before they started over marketing it, inviting in the paying idiots, and inducting people who have nothing to do with wrestling. '05 to '08 were decent and then they were just a wreck after that.

There hasn't been anything as exciting as Sherri's speech in a long time on those.

  159. That's closer than Auburn Hills where the Pistons play is to Detroit and I almost never hear it being referenced by the proper city name. WWE comes to Rosemont and calls it Chicago. Pretty common to see that in sports broadcasting.

  160. Cool. Let me figure out my schedule for the next couple of weeks and I'll let you know. (We're interviewing interns right now, and it's really messing up my schedule).

  161. Vince's love for big men = make Nelson Frazier a star. Unfortunately it didn't work in Philadelphia in 1995. Think about that for a second. The Philly crowd may have wanted a new star instead of UT or HBK, but they didn't want Mabel. Vince took it as a hint not to put too much emphasis on the KOTR winner. Rather he took it as a vehicle to build hope for the future which was something his competition wasn't performing well. For example WCW tried to push Alex Wright and the Renegade in 1995 to similar success as the WWF with Mabel.

  162. I thought they were from California and Danny Glover was their coach?

  163. Wrestling fashion is the best thing in the world.

Ziggler should transition his wardrobe over to a Zubaz and Fanny Pack combo.

  164. Pete Rose got inducted in 04.

  166. Between #GiveDivasAChance and the heel-turning of almost every main-roster Diva, I wonder if they're setting up some kind of NXT women's "Invasion" angle, with Charlotte and crew coming in as babyfaces.

If that's not the plan, I have no idea what is going on. Brie was wrestling like a face last night, but the announcers were still treating Nikki like a heel on commentary. Summer's "face turn" was only for a week. Natalya wrestles as a face but valets as a heel. I don't get it.

  167. As an AWA Scott Hall fan, I always hated the Razor Ramon gimmick.

  168. Probably he doesn't want the night to be about him, he wants it to be about the inductees.

Everyone would thank him, quite likely, and there's really no need.

  169. He at least made several Wrestlemania appearances instead of appearing on one Smackdown

  170. Looks like we're moving toward a WWE Universe in which every wrestler gets to (has to?) wear some kind of jacket or cape for their entrance. After last night it's now Lucha Dragons, New Day, Ambrose, Harper, Ziggler, Barrett, Bryan, Stardust, Adam Rose, Wyatt, Jericho, The Ascension, Sandow, Los Matadores, Miz, Neville and R-Truth.

  171. Nothing WWE does any more has any consistency. At this point, I'm just writing what I see. :(

  172. Why don't you just ask X-Man for his phone # already?

    ReplyDelete
  173. Having him debut as part of the DoD, with horrifically bad entrance music, teaming with Kamala in a handicap loss to Hogan would have been so much more WCW-ish then what we actually got.

  174. I think part of having the B-Team was a merch thing.

"Look at these schlubs who can wear the t-shirt and be part of the gang, you can too!"

Or maybe I'm giving them too much credit...

  178. 40 minutes just like Anaheim to LA

    ReplyDelete
  179. I wonder when they will induct Joe Gomez...

    ReplyDelete
  180. Is Anaheim that close to actual LA? Well, I guess I do need to call my ex-girlfriend and tell her she's dumb for always whining about my stupid "Anaheim is in LA" joke."

    ReplyDelete
  181. I think you're being harsh again

This was a really good show, at least a ****. Only the women’s segment was actively bad, and virtually everything else involving a program happening on the PPV was good or great. Kane was awesome (I know!), Sheamus was deliciously evil until Ziggler put him in his place, and Cena continues to rock this open challenge gimmick, to the point where I kinda want him to win on Sunday.

Also, check out Dolph’s hot as hell promo on the app. Almost sells you on the Kiss Me Arse match.

  182. Back on RSPW, there was NEWZ that Nash would be renamed "Stone Cold," and that's why they changed the Ringmaster's name so fast.

    ReplyDelete
  183. I don't think that Mabel would have worked in another city, because it was a big fat guy wearing a silly name and a violet tent. And I don't think that Renegade and Alex Wright were main event material either - at least not in 95.

If Mabel would have won the Royal Rumble 95 and headlined WMXI, would you have blamed the Royal Rumble concept?

    ReplyDelete
  184. From the Hall debut to Fall Brawl '96 was some of the best stuff WCW ever did

    ReplyDelete
  185. It's one of the big gripes I have about Southern California being so overserved when it comes to Wrestlemanias and Summerslam. If you count 12 and 16 there have been entirely too many WM and Summerslam events in LA.

  186. He was never a great worker but his 96 run was spectacularly awful.

  187. I agree with you that I much preferred the Hall of Fame when it wasn't in a stadium. I remember when WWE used to explicitly request that fans not wear t-shirts and chant inappropriately. The feel is significantly different now, and not really for the better. I personally prefer everybody sitting up on the stage -- do we need to see the TV HD set?

  188. Yep, sandwiched between O'Hare Airport and the city itself.

  189. but almost all of those times except *maybe* 1998 (depending on one's definition) his alignment had already run its course: but if 1996 babyface Rocky Maivia was over like crazy and they had still turned him heel, wouldn't have that been a dumb move?

    ReplyDelete
  190. I'd like it as a dais where the inductees come sit up at the panel 1 by 1.

Did you also see they put the 94 ceremony where Gorilla got inducted up on the Network? It's a real treat.
