Reading the March 30, 1998 Observer, and two things struck me. I was curious what you'd think.
"In the 4/27 battle with Raw in Hampton and Nitro in Norfolk, WWF has sold 5,910 tickets for $102,000 or about 80% of the building while Nitro is already sold out at 9,000 tickets and $164,000."
This, of course, was the famous DX Invasion. When I've seen the WWE's side of the story, Nitro was supposedly papered to all heck, but according to this, the Nitro show (during the peak of WCW's business) was sold out in a bigger building with a bigger gate, faster than the WWF show cross-town. So who's right here? Is the WWE lying today, or did Meltzer get ba
d
info back then?Given that Nitro was at its hottest point then, it's pretty clearly WWE lying. In fact WCW used to err on the side of going too small with the arenas for a while when they could have sold out bigger ones. But that was the propaganda line from Vince -- they paper their shows, we don't.
Also-
"Kevin "Nailz" Wacholz, the original Latrell Sprewell, is expected to join the NWO and get a big push."
Nailz was supposed to get a WCW job? What happened? Do you remember this? This seems out of the blue, as this would have been seven years after choking McMahon and four years after the steroid trials. In retrospect, this would have been a bigger disaster than Warrior in WCW, right?
But what would they have named him? Nutz? Boltz?
NWO was stale as hell by 98, at least nWo Hollywood (I enjoyed the Wolfpack). Im guessing he would have joined Hollywood because he would have been really awkward in the Wolfpack.
ReplyDeleteNitro sold out like every show for the first several months of 98, I think. It was some kind of record. Tickets I guess would have been sold way in advance before the product totally fell off the cliff.
ReplyDeleteI guess that Nailz thing is the only thing Meltzer has ever gotten wrong. Keep it quiet.
Bruce Pritchard recently said at a q&a that they lied about the free nitro tickets...the screen shot they took was for a future event at the Scope
ReplyDelete97 shows were sold out throughout as well. Very hot product
ReplyDeletesdvsdvsdv
ReplyDeleteThey only wanted Nailz, known as the convict, to mock Vince.
ReplyDeleteWatching Summerslam 04. John Cena is insanely over.
ReplyDeleteYeah I think HHH or one of the DX guys said as much on one of the many Monday Night Raws features WWE has made (can't remember if it was the network thing or the dvd or something else).
ReplyDeleteDidn't they run a bunch of stadiums in January of 99 as well?
ReplyDeleteEven in 97 their houses were doing well. Sting was showing up randomly at certain houses, and word got out. But even with the nWo no-shows, those houses were packed with good wrestling on the under card. Start with 15 minutes of luchadores, some mix of Jericho/Eddy/Rey/Dean, the tag teams, Benoit, DDP, and then the upper card and it was a pretty good show. give credit, Syxx/Xpac would carry a lot of upper card nWo stuff for Hall/Nash, so at least the wrestling was good.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but I think there was already more paper than sold at that point
ReplyDeleteI still think if there doing 15K sold 15K paper in a big building like the Georgia Some they'd be doing okay.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite possible WCW signed him to a deal and forgot about him. Apparently it happened quite a bit back in the day.
ReplyDeleteWent to a Nitro in Sept 97 and Slamboree in May of 98 in Worcester, traditional WWF northeast city, and I can assure you it was sold the fuck out. Could only get seats in the top balcony for both shows, an area that has been blocked off for 10 plus years.
ReplyDeleteSting came from the rafters on that Nitro and it was loudest pop Id ever heard up to that point and of course Slamboree was that bullshit Malenko/mask angle that cost my boy Jericho the title (the pop for that angle was as loud as Jericho says it was in his book, it was an amazing moment).
Where's the daily thread? I received a judgmental look at the liquor store and I want to complain about it.
ReplyDeleteTJ: We talked about this a while back, now it's Wrestlecrap:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.wrestlecrap.com/inductions/induction-scott-steiners-freak-show-the-greatest-workout-in-the-history-of-man/
Who's in for crowdfunding a copy of this to everyone's favorite Fat Buff Otter?
Yeah, someone's really dropping the ball on these lately. Need to pick it up guys.
ReplyDeleteI still wish WCW would have let them in.
ReplyDeleteAll I remember about the DX invasion is that it completely changed the course of wrestling.
ReplyDeleteThat Nailz rumor was repeated every month for a while. It alternated with the Yokozuna joining the nWo rumor.
ReplyDeleteThey should talk about that on the Network sometime.
ReplyDeleteAnd Demolition coming back!
ReplyDelete"Okay, got his attention. What the hell was step two again?"
ReplyDeletehi why wcw sell tix for less than wwf
ReplyDeleteI would call that documentary STEAMROLL: How A Tank Changed Wrestling
ReplyDeleteOf course it did. THEY HAD A TANK!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's been a fun run, but Steve Austin said on his podcast with Wade Keller than Kidd and Cesaro were getting over "organically," and we know what that means for them...
ReplyDeleteI still love the advice they gave DX if Meng and Barbarian came out. Run.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Nailz do a one shot at Slamboree 93 against Sting and they called him The Prisoner or something?
ReplyDeleteWell according to TNA fans, Dave Meltzer is a liar. This proves it.
ReplyDeleteEverybody knows that the DX "Tank" invasion was the turning point in the WWF vs. WCW Monday Night War. If it wasn't for the DX "Tank", nobody would even know who Steve Austin or The Rock was. Within minutes of the "Tank" showing up in the parking lot, Nitro began to drop in ratings and attendance by the minute.
That's how powerful the "Tank" was. Changed the business forever.
"Tank"
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty much wwe lore now lol
ReplyDeleteYupp
ReplyDeleteLooks like I picked up a stalker.
ReplyDeleteAl Lobama has followed me over to Danimal's blog and is doing his best to "insult" me.
I feel so happy that I've picked up my first online villain.
They did almost get Zuna, many times after 97 but he kept pulling out of the deal and Mcmahon eventually re-signed Fatu (the Samoans felt mcmahon wasn't using them anymore and they wanted to pursue wcw together)
ReplyDelete"Oh look it's Meng, Scott Norton and... guys? Guys?"
ReplyDeleteWhat's more annoying: that WWE insists the DX invasion was more historically important than it was, or the fact WWE says that DX was in a tank when it was very clearly a Jeep?
ReplyDeleteAs a car guy I say the second one.
ReplyDeleteThe first. I hate hearing about the stupid DX Invasion.
ReplyDeleteAll of the above.
ReplyDeleteThey should have Hunter drive a tank to the first Monday Night football game of a season. Can you imagine how that would change the ratings!?
ReplyDeleteThen he should drive it to Big Bang Theory, NCIS and Scandal! Obliterate everyone on TV!
ReplyDeleteWould they have really cared that much to shoot on Hunter and the WWF guys?
ReplyDeleteThe Olsen Twins won't be in the new Full House. They should kill Michelle off and the funeral brings the family back together.
ReplyDeleteThere's one of my favorite Monday Night "What If?"s:
ReplyDeleteHHH, X-Pac, and the Outlaws vs Meng and Barbarian. And if we want this to be "fair", then I bet the Steiners wouldn't mind joining in.
My prediction: PAIN. GLORIOUS, BARBARIC (no pun intended) PAIN.
One only hopes... well, this one at least.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm legitimately frightened of those girls.
ReplyDeleteI think that they are goblins.
That's not cool. That place is for bros being cool, not for feudin'.
ReplyDeleteSteph getting obliterated by Cote de Pablo's character on NCIS? I'm watching.
ReplyDeleteAll this talk of nails reminds me that someone should get "the Hammer" as a gimmick.
ReplyDeleteWhat are they? 21? They look like Cameron Diaz.
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't work these days. Matches are too short and it takes the Hammer 15 minutes just to get warmed up.
ReplyDeletePretty sure they're close to 30. I don't know what that is in goblin years.
ReplyDeleteWere anyone thinking they'd have the beatdown, then have the FoF job later on. "Hey, these guys are about to be arrested for murder but STILL weren't tough enough to beat Harlem Heat!"
ReplyDelete"Hey guys, go beat up-"
ReplyDelete"Yeah okay"
"But I didn't say who to-"
"We'll get to them soon enough"
"The original Latrell Sprewell"
ReplyDeleteTIMELESS HUMOUR IS TIMELESS.
Meltzer was lying to hold WCW down. I'm going to sue him.
ReplyDeleteAs a Tank guy I say THREE COUNT RULZZZ
ReplyDeleteIn light of the Josh Duggar molestation situation, which is even more awkward since every single Republican in the Presidential race has a photo with him, not to mention Huckabee has outright defended him, Nailz should try and claim that McMahon sexually abused him again. It might have some traction this time.
ReplyDeleteGreat moment
ReplyDeleteThen what would USA show right before raw?
ReplyDeleteThat would kind of be awesome.
ReplyDeleteMike Huckabee is such a fucking twit.
ReplyDeleteHere is Southwest Missouri, the sentiment is, 'they're from Arkansas, and fondling your sibling is an Arkansas tradition.'
ReplyDeleteThe parents are pieces of garbage for waiting an entire year before reporting it
You got it, dude!!!
ReplyDeleteTank footage! Getting it washed, tuned up, etc.
ReplyDeleteThe tank is a national hero! Like the inanimate carbon rod!
She should die of a drug overdose.
ReplyDeleteNailz wasn't memorable by 1993, let alone '98. I doubt anyone would have known who he was in WCW.
ReplyDeleteHow else could they afford to have 19 kids without a tv show? This they waited as long as possible
ReplyDeleteOverdose
ReplyDeleteHe'll never be president.
ReplyDeleteMan, that woman's vagina must be as big as a whale's mouth.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I remember that night clearly. It was a clever, memorable moment, but had no influence on my overall interest in the product. I still wanted to see Goldberg squash geeks and Benoit vs. Booker matches more than DX at that point
ReplyDeleteOr they could use some fucking birth control. Ever hear of tubes tied or a vasectomy
ReplyDeleteWho wants 19 kids?!?!?! I have three and 90% of the time I don't want all three of them.
ReplyDeleteThat's not Jesus' way, my friend. Jesus wanted them to be fruitful and multiply and go on TV.
ReplyDeleteWell which one would get the job?
ReplyDeleteThat would have been gold. The arena garage door rolls up, with Nash and Hall standing there. They just give a head nod to acknowledge them, then go back inside to no-sell DX
ReplyDeleteMalenko unmasking and destroying Jericho was more memorable to me than the DX jeep thing
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that they actually believe that
ReplyDeleteThey brought John Nord in for a run.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that being a teacher has taught me is that I don't want kids if my own. Even some of the best kids still stress out their parents
ReplyDeleteI'm watching Scream for the first time since the late 90s. I'm entertained by the film but I could see now someone could really not like it.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of WCW gates, I wonder how far out they had to book the Georgia Dome. It seems like they could have done a big summer PPV (Great American Bash?) there instead of just Nitro, but I'm sure they were booked for Nitro TV long before Hogan-Goldberg was a PPV main event on their radar
ReplyDeleteIt's just how kids roll
ReplyDeleteTo epic fanfare, no doubt
ReplyDeleteIt boggles my mind the last WCW ppv was Slamboree 1993.
ReplyDeleteThey always had Nitro in domes, but not PPVs, with Slamboree '99 being the exception
ReplyDeleteI'm watching sopranos for the first time through. I fucking cannot stand Tony's mom. She reminds me of my own grandma. She's always complains that no one sees her and when we do, she always cries and complains that we don't see her more often. She also complains about living there every day and wanting to die.
ReplyDeleteI remember being jacked for him. I'm a Nordberger to the end (that's what John Nord fans are called...Nordbergers)!
ReplyDeleteYeah, she pretty much turned me off the show back when it was on. Still haven't finished the series
ReplyDeleteStarrcade '97 would have been perfect for the Georgia Dome
ReplyDeleteYou are literally the one and only member of the Nordbergers, sir.
ReplyDeleteI want to throw the remote at the tv every time she's on.
ReplyDeleteHis sister is worse.
ReplyDeleteThey could have filled that thing for Hogan-Sting.
ReplyDeleteThat's what you think. We're an underground cabal of loyal Nordbergers.
ReplyDeleteJust started season 2 and she's already annoying. I can't wait until both get whacked
ReplyDeleteCleveland cop found not guilty of all charges. Apparently there are going to be "riots" downtown.
ReplyDeleteScratch that. No one is more annoying than Tony's son.
ReplyDeleteWill there be riots if the cavs win the title?
ReplyDeleteEven Goldberg-Nash in '98.
ReplyDeleteYou know, after Wrestle War '90, WCW never ran another PPV in Greensboro
I submit to you that Steve Keirn (Skinner) and John Nord (Berzerker)--with a tweak to each of their characters and keeping the beards--could have pre-dated the Wyatt Family by 20 years.
ReplyDeleteRiots? What a shock. Time to come up with something new
ReplyDeleteYou know you're supposed to find her insufferable right?
ReplyDeletePPV watch today?
ReplyDeleteWake me up when one of these riots happens in a city that would be missed. /trolling
ReplyDeleteI know many people found skyler white annoying but she wasn't bad.
ReplyDeleteGoldberg going off the deep end and becoming an even more violent, dominant killer after the Nash screwjob would have made the "Fingerpoke of Doom" a net-positive, rather than the punchline of a joke. Have him kill Hall at Souled Out, Luger at Superbrawl, Steiner at Uncensored, Nash at Spring Stampede, then Hogan at Slamboree. RIP nWo, move on to Goldberg vs. others (Sting, Bret, Flair, Savage)
ReplyDeleteX-Pac heat, dude
ReplyDeleteLana vs. Renee. Who gets it?
ReplyDeleteLana only if she's wearing the Russian gimmick outfit; otherwise Renee
ReplyDeleteEveryone jumps to sexism when it isn't really there these days...
ReplyDeleteWith that said a lot of the Skylark hate just felt like "stupid WOMAN". It was embarasing--her character arc gives incredible weight to the story, especially when she fully turns in season 5.
Probably lol. Don't see that happening though
ReplyDeleteYeah it's really lame.
ReplyDeletewake me up the first time a jury convicts a cop for a crime on duty that didn't have a complete video with the cop uttering the phrase, "I'm going to kill me a n----r" I'm not taking sides on the Cleveland case, but getting conviction of a cop is impossible in this country.
ReplyDeleteThe mishandling of Goldberg after his title win was what I really think killed WCW. Goldberg had a chance to become one of the top 5 biggest pro wrestling stars of the modern era. He had mainstream recognition and fans loved his character. WCW never capitalized on his potential.
ReplyDeleteIn 1999 WCW could've rode the Goldberg train or the three year old nWo train. They picked the wrong train
Rib cookoff, both teams at home and proms downtown. What a bizarre time to announce a verdict.
ReplyDeleteThe HHH/Angle/Stephanie angle in 2000 was a pretty obvious example of missing the story arc progression, as they basically left out the middle part. Was it just bad timing because Austin was coming back for HHH? Or do you think HHH had a Macho Man complex about Stephanie in real life?
ReplyDeleteI actually found her interesting once she's all "can't beat him, join him", starting with buying the car wash to help launder the money
ReplyDeleteAgreed. If they had bad guys who were willing to do the right thing (and less creative control), they could have had it both ways too. Rebuild the nWo "elite" for one last run in early '99, let Goldberg kill it off. Then find the next "new star" you want to build to beat Goldberg cleanly at some point
ReplyDeleteNitro ratings were more important than PPV buys to Bischoff
ReplyDelete"Ah, but who's left standing?"
ReplyDelete-HHH (most likely saying this on top of a jeep/tank thing)
Hunter refused to let Steph leave him for Angle, feeling he'd be the #3 face behind Austin and Rock.
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty much my perfect scenario for 1999 WCW.
ReplyDeleteThe fact WCW didn't run a Hogan vs Goldberg rematch is insane to me
I agree to an extent. I think it has swung the other way too, in that it is just assumed that there was wrong-doing and that it had to be racially motivated. There is an obvious problem in this country, but it is possible for a cop to be cleared of wrong-doing too. Let's maybe hear the facts before we start burning neighborhoods. It's become a little too knee-jerk toward anarchy for me.
ReplyDeleteSave it for the Bash
ReplyDeleteGoldberg never regaining the title is mind boggling
ReplyDeleteInexcusable
ReplyDeleteit is assumed by certain people (both by race and political leaning) but when it comes to a jury, you ain't getting a conviction.
ReplyDeleteAlways, which was incredibly short sighted
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, heel Skylar was way more interesting than what I thought she was getting (Ricen laced tea)
ReplyDeleteWhat's funny is that all the guys understand where he's coming from and all the girls understand where Steph is coming from. It would probably make HHH right up there with Austin, especially if the most logical conclusion is Hunter beating the crap out of Angle for stealing Steph
ReplyDeleteWWF was definitely fudging--though to be fair WCW used to book their arenas months in advance, so they did paper some crowds before the NWO got super hot and they could fill any building they wanted. Unfortunately--as noted--they booked months in advance, so they missed a few months worth of great ticket revenue. Then they got bit the other way when the company went cold, and they had months of shows lined up in buildings they could never fill. But at that exact moment, yeah... the WWF was fibbing. Right on TV even, as they asked the fans if they'd gotten free tickets. Both companies probably gave out about the same amount of free tickets via radio contests and such to hype the shows. It's always part of local show advertising.
ReplyDeleteI've heard people say "Yeah, like Hogan would lie down for Goldberg twice."
ReplyDeleteBook an nWo screwjob ending
It could have been the beginning of Hogan's road to babyface redemption too. Just have Goldberg plow through the nWo, then beat Hogan clean in the middle. Nash & Hall beat up Hogan to write him off for vacation, then Nash/Hall move on to something else. Hogan returns red & yellow at some point for a nostalgia run, earns everyone's trust again. Do Outsiders vs. Hogan/Goldberg at some point for the cheap thrill quality and move on
ReplyDeleteExactly, after Hogan gives it everything and is coming up short, the Outsiders turn on him and leave him for dead. Goldberg wins, but Hulk gets a little sympathy heat on him for later. Hogan returning in six months, tearing off the nWo shirt one last time and declaring war on Nash/Hall would have been just fine as a co-main event storyline
ReplyDeleteDDP and Jeff fucking Jarrett had multiple reigns instead
ReplyDeleteYeah, perfect three year bookends
ReplyDeleteIt's probably a bit of a both. Timing wise, Austin's coming back, The Rock is there, so what does Triple H do after the Angle feud? He's the #3 face and probably ends up turning back to heel soon after anyway. I think it's a case where the story itself would have been great had it of gone how we think it should have but in the big picture it's probably best they did it how they did.
ReplyDeleteI think that was the plan, but Goldberg took time off to film a movie and fight over his contract.
ReplyDeleteHell yes, I will go out on a limb and say the sympathy heat would have put HHH on their level. Rock had been on top a while, Austin returned as the same babyface character he was before. HHH would have been competing for #1 babyface in terms of fan reaction. Ironic, because he thinks he is on their level in WWE revisionist history land.
ReplyDeleteI wish they had just gone with someone else as the "driver". Then you can do HHH vs. Angle in its entirety, Austin vs. (whoever) to pay off that storyline.
ReplyDeleteBasically what WWE did with Hogan and the Outsiders at Mania 18
ReplyDeleteUnexcusable
ReplyDeleteOh same, it turning out to be Triple H was lame. Of course having it originally just be Rikishi was also lame.
ReplyDeletePretty much
ReplyDeleteShe was smart, she knew how to manipulate the books. Everything would've been fine if Walter hadn't been so ambitious and stubborn
ReplyDeleteAngle's clearly trying to get in Stephanie's pants, which she encourages but assures all involved they're "just friends" even though she knows he wants more and it's causing troubles in her relationship with Triple H.
ReplyDeleteWomen would definitely relate to that one.
I would go Jericho or Angle.
ReplyDeleteI dig the idea of it being so "obvious" that HHH was the driver, who plotted to get Austin out of the way so he could rule 1999/2000. When all the evidence points that way, have the Angle/HHH/Steph thing also reaching critical mass. HHH is getting babyface reactions over the Angle/Steph stuff, but he's also the "Cerebral Assassin" we're pretty sure ran over Austin. Do a big reveal that it was Kurt Angle (ran Austin over at Survivor Series '99, coincidentally his PPV debut) and he was trying to get everyone on HHH's trail recently. HHH and Austin hate each other already, HHH and Angle are feuding over Stephanie and the influence she wields, and now Austin and Angle hate each other. Play HHH as the same opportunistic, heelish character he has been, but let him be the tweener in all of this. Run a couple Austin-Angle matches. Austin vs. HHH "Three Stages" can still happen as Angle plays them off each other. Rock vs. Austin, HHH vs. Angle at Mania
Vince seems like the kind of guy that would fuck you in the ass just to establish dominance.
ReplyDeleteI liked my ex's kids, but I think that was because I really wasn't responsible for them in any significant way. Hang out with them, buy them shit, etc...but I didn't have to make any major decisions or anything.
ReplyDeleteIf they would've kept the storyline going until Wrestlemania and still have that cat fight between Steph and Trish in the middle of the match…….yeah they left money on the table with that one
ReplyDeleteWCW booked way in advance. 6 months, 9 months. They might have booked nearly a year out on some shows. Those Hog/Road Wild shows had to be lined up for the following year shortly after that year's biker rally week ended. Club La Vela was another they had to lock down way early. Whenever they ran a building that held NBA or some other league sport they'd have to coordinate so as the fit in around those schedules. WCW has to be given credit for having pretty good arena bookers for much of its run. It's much the same for WWF/E as well. Their venue booking is a pretty well-oiled machine and has been for years.
ReplyDeleteThey should just offer one of them a ridiculous amount of money to turn on the other and take the role.
ReplyDeleteI forgot I randomly started watching Freddy vs Jason last night.
ReplyDelete"It's much the same for WWF/E as well. Their venue booking is a pretty well-oiled machine and has been for years."
ReplyDeleteWith one hilariously sad exception.
I couldn't stand Meadow either, but she got tolerable around the time she went to college
ReplyDeleteHulk wanted to be a face again, which killed the Goldberg angle.
ReplyDeleteFlair/Goldberg/Page vs. Hogan/Outsiders could have main evented Slamboree. At The Great American Bash, Goldberg defeats Hogan for the belt. The next night, Hall & Nash turn on Hogan. He takes a vacation and we don't see him until the fall.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting because it's almost like they're telling the audience "Yes we know this is a slasher flick" when naming off some scary movie cliches
ReplyDeleteGoldberg's Revenge Tour '99:
ReplyDeleteSouled Out: Goldberg def. Scott Hall
SuperBrawl: Goldberg def. Scott Steiner
Uncensored: Goldberg def. Lex Luger
Spring Stampede: Goldberg def. Kevin Nash
Slamboree: Goldberg, Sting & Ric Flair def. Hollywood Hogan & The Outsiders
The Great American Bash: Goldberg def. Hogan
Its not hard, but thankfully certain people wanted Goldberg stopped
Jericho would have been the best choice. He was kinda stale as a face at that point
ReplyDeleteSteph had taken over creative by that point so nothing that good could happen
ReplyDeleteInexcusable.
ReplyDeleteUnexcusable.
ReplyDeleteMan I was so bummed when that movie came out. I'd been hyped about it for ages, and when it arrived it was just so weak. Jason didn't look like the Jason from the last few movies, and the plot was lazy, the acting seemingly even worse than most of the earlier movies. Damn that movie, damn it to hell!
ReplyDeleteI think there was a recent Tommy Hall Nitro review from December 99 that was in a dome, and it sold like 8000 tickets. WCW and their domes.
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible they thought "Hey, let's do Flair/Hogan (and turn Flair heel and Hogan face while we're at it)" during this period. What a bunch of clowns.
ReplyDeleteHogan/Flair was beyond played out at that point too. Shit, the matchup was played out in 96.
ReplyDeleteIn fairness, Flair was on fire at that point. He was easily the most over babyface. At was good he finally got his win from Hogan but he didn't need the title or the turn.
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't the most stable job so I kinda get his thinking.
ReplyDeleteMaking as much money as possible (ppv cash) seemed like a better idea than getting an extra .05 in TV ratings. He had been in charge for 5 years by that point so he was safe
ReplyDeleteI'd have sent out Meng, Barbarian, Norton and the Steiners. Wanna go, tough guys?
ReplyDeleteHistory tells me that no one is ever secure in that job. The company never really made money so that didn't seem to concern many people. The ratings were good, the buildings were packed and merchandise was selling.
ReplyDeleteI never saw that match but I thought Flair pinning Hogan after a high heel shoe to the eye on NItro was hilarious.
ReplyDeleteWasn't that Arn?
ReplyDeleteArn pinned him after Hogan got powder to the face from Woman and then Arn hit him with Liz's boot. Then Arn got a DQ win over him the next week.
ReplyDeleteIf they don't lose $60 million in 2000, there's no way TNT drops Nitro. Even at the end, they had good numbers. Once the PPV buys went away, they were toast
ReplyDeleteok. Got my ridiculous finishes mixed up
ReplyDeleteI'm from Virginia and I can attest that Southern Va is Horseman Country. WCW was always a bigger presence there. In fact, I don't remember WWF even running shows in the area until 97. No question WWE was lying.
ReplyDeleteIMO, Bischoff at the helm was always a smoke and mirrors operation. Nitro was getting dropped regardless because the new Turner people didn't want to be associated with wrestling anymore.
ReplyDeleteIf WCW is making a profit, they wind up on a TV station. I don't know which one, but they don't go out of business
ReplyDeleteIsn't that on the NBA and the Nuggets though? WWE had the building booked for months, the team should've realized that and the league should've double checked with them to make sure they weren't gonna trample on another booking.
ReplyDeleteThe January 1999 shows did excellent business, some of the best they've ever done. By the summer they were really bad.
ReplyDelete"Look at the adjective... tank!"
ReplyDeleteThey booked them out pretty far -- ironically, the original plan for Slamboree 1999 was to run it in the full TWA dome setup. Of course, that didn't really work out so well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but most of them did huge business for WCW and were some of the biggest crowds and gates in North America for wrestling in over a decade and obviously the biggest non WWF crowds ever.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Goldberg was basically the 'straw that stirs the drink' at that point and you could have just mowed down everyone with a neo-Superhero in his prime and done monster business for multiple programs -- especially if they could have got Goldberg in there with guys like Hart and Benoit to really help round out his in-ring game.
ReplyDeleteBoth companies had full houses in good times, both companies papered houses in bad ones. It's the wrestling business -- they are the red-headed step child of entertainment and perception is everything.
ReplyDeleteTank Abbott?
ReplyDeleteLana if she's wearing one of those skirt dresses she wore in NXT before she would introduce Rusev by his first AND last name. Ooooooooooh gurl...
ReplyDeleteNothing against Renee, however.
Renee. Lana just seems like a generic blonde.
ReplyDeleteKelly Rowland didn't help the matter
ReplyDeleteI thought the big Jason/Freddy fight was AWESOME, though. Jason fought basically like I imagine Kane should have wrestled.
ReplyDeleteAs someone from southern Virginia, this is 100% fact, especially the part about it being Horsemen country.
ReplyDeleteWWF didn't come here until a random late-97 RAW (the one where Austin drives out in his pickup truck to troll The Rock during a match).
In fact, it wasn't until 2002 when WWE came back to the area. They come by 3-4 times a year now, although you'd never know it, as they're ashamed to admit that RAW is airing live from here.
"Faggot" really sticks out.
ReplyDeletePersonally, as a HUGE fan, I feel it's one of the worst Jason movies. It probably gave most movie goers exactly what they wanted though.
ReplyDeleteI'll take'm both, I'm hardcore!
ReplyDeleteI thought Skylar was great, and very attractive. I hated her when she fucked Ted though.
ReplyDelete
