Something that has bothered me a little bit recently is the theory that Randy Savage was all coked up during some of his classic promos. I'm not sure if it's more a meme or if people really think Savage was dipping into the nose candy. By all accounts the Macho Man was notoriously thrifty making it hard for me to believe he would willing pay to support that type of habit. There are stories about how much he loved coffee, in particular I remember Warrior talking about them downing a pot of coffee before a match. Lanny Poffo has also mentioned on several podcasts how thrifty Savage was and that he didn't blow money on drugs and partying. Now I'm not trying to say Savage was a straight edge superstar, but I think it's ridiculous to accuse Macho Man of being wrestling's version of Scarface. I feel Savage was just that intense and talented.
I feel like maybe Warrior was using coffee as a euphamism for "giant bag of blow", because there's been numerous people who have cited Savage's love for cocaine and other drugs, along with everyone else in the 80s. Plus having your heart explode at a relatively young age like it did doesn't typically happen from coffee alone. I mean, I love Savage as much as anyone, but I'm not operating under false illusions here.

ReplyDeleteAs crazy as Randy Savage seemed to come off I never heard any stories of his partying. Lots of Elizabeth in the closet and he didn't spend his money stories but I don't know too may Randy Savage drugs/drinking stories.

ReplyDeleteTotally possible he was doing drugs during that era, but Macho didn't even need coffee to cut those bats hit insane promos. The guy was a genius nutty bar.
ReplyDeleteAlso keep in mind that he may have had a network of enablers that continually gave him the blow so he might not have even needed to pay for it.

On one hand I've not heard a lot of Savage drug stories like I have with Piper, Muraco, Fuji, Adonis, etc. He was genuinely wired so that and some coffee can definitely explain the promos. And the steroids (remember he was obviously juicing hard when he came back in 2000) plus pain killers can cause the heart issues. That said, coke was THE drug for a ton of wrestlers and other athletes and celebs in the 80s. It's amazing how many baseball players, basketball players, hollywood stars, etc. were snorting in the late 70s and into the 80s. Half the Lakers were doing coke when they won their first two titles.

ReplyDeleteAnd from the people I know that do it and have done it, if you keep below a certain level of consumption it's possible to basically get it for free. Like, you show up at a party, and people are doing it and they offer it to you for free because you're their friend or because it's weird being the only guy who's getting high.
It's ok to still like him even if he did cocaine in the 1980s like literally everyone else.

ReplyDeleteRadio show I listen to in Philly said that when he was a guest on their show back in 2000 or so, he was clearly all coked up, and at one point left to go to the bathroom, took 15 mins, and came back noticeably more hyped up and frantic than when he went in.

A lot of people talk about drug use when they really have no direct experience or knowledge of it. During the eighties, wrestlers were encouraged to adopt over the top, flamboyant personas and a hyped up interview style. Basically, the more over the top, the better. Perhaps cocaine use contributed to the "manic" interview style of some wrestlers, but in most cases, it probably had nothing to do with it. Contrary to popular belief, cocaine doesn't magically transform normal people into ranting maniacs. And there are plenty of wrestlers (for example Ultimate Warrior) who rarely took recreational drugs, yet still carried on like lunatics in their interviews.
ReplyDeleteI don't know whether Randy Savage was a heavy coke user or not. I mean, it's entirely possible I suppose. There was a lot of cocaine around in the eighties, particularly in the entertainment business, and drug use was very common among wrestlers. But what I'm saying is that the line of reasoning that goes: "oh my god he's talking crazy in his interview he must be on coke", is entirely spurious. You don't need cocaine to rant and wave your arms around a lot, and cocaine doesn't necessarily compel people to rant and wave their arms around a lot.
As for Savage's heart "exploding", heavy coke use can contribute to heart failure, yes. As can numerous other lifestyle choices, such as heavy drinking and / or smoking, abusing steroids, being on the road 300 days a year for more than a decade and getting hit in the head, slammed into the mat and diving off turnbuckles night after night. In other words, a wrestler's lifestyle tends to be uniquely unhealthy and conducive to heart problems and other health issues, with or without the addition of cocaine to the mix.
Maybe he just had to take a huge dump.

With inflation? I'd have to ask my connects about current prices. But given that several of my immediate family were involved in the selling of Colombian marching powder, I wouldn't imagine it'd be that pricey.

Actually, cocaine is pretty expensive and it was more expensive back in the eighties than it is now. The average price was about US$100 per gram. The quantity consumed can vary vastly from user to user. An addict can easily get through one gram a day, although some would use much more than that. Assuming a gram a day though that would be US$700 per week, which is a nice chunk of change by anybody's standards. I assume Savage was on good money back in the eighties, but a heavy coke habit would certainly make a dent in his income. All pure speculation of course; as I outlined in a previous post, there's really no evidence to suggest that Savage was a heavy coke user. People are just jumping to conclusion based on hearsay and stereotypes about how they think people on cocaine behave.

But by the same token, it wasn't as if every single human being on the planet was using coke, or even everybody in wrestling, an industry in which drug use has traditionally been rife. It honestly doesn't bother me one way or the other if Savage used coke or not. But the "evidence" people are using to draw their conclusions here (weird eyes, manic promos) is just plain stupid. It's total conjecture.
