It's my favorite day of the week! Not only do I have the day off, but I get to buy some new comics! The only thing that would make it better is if Arrow was back from it's hiatus. I only have two more weeks to go for that. I'm sure I'll survive.
Supergirl Returns
Supergirl Returns
One show that HAS come back from a (very short) winter hiatus is Supergirl, over on CBS. I haven't watched this week's episode yet, although I did catch glimpses of it while I was at work, since the TV in front of my desk is almost always set to CBS.
What I love about the current crop of DC Comics TV shows is all the references to the rest of the DC Universe are thrown in there. Arrow established this early, with Easter eggs in almost every episode of the first season. Flash followed suit last year and now Supergirl is continuing the trend. I never expected to hear the names Max Lord, Red Tornado or J'onn J'onnz on a live-action TV program, so this is a nice little geek out moment for me. And while Superman is not a main focus of the show, it's nice to know he exists and plays a role in Kara Zor-El's development.
I don't know how long the series will last, but I'm hoping that Kara eventually manages some sort of Justice League-style team-up. While the Arrowverse has introduced a large cast of supporting superheroes, most of them are being shipped off into the time stream with the new Legends of Tomorrow show (debuting Jan. 21). But there are definite makings of a Justice League over on Earth-(Channel) 2. With Supergirl and Martian Manhunter already in the fold, introducing Beatriz de Costa and Tora Olafsdotter (Fire and Ice, respectively) would be a great call back to the bwa-ha-ha days of Justice League International. Hey, a dork can dream...
This Week's Highlights
As everyone recovers from the holidays, the first batch of comic book releases for 2016 is easing everyone into the new year. You can see a full list of releases by clicking here.
Continuing to capitalize on the world's current most popular film franchise, Marvel is releasing three Star Wars books this week - Star Wars No. 14 and Vader No. 15 (both part of the Vader Down storyline) and Obi-Wan & Anakin No. 1 of 5. The main Marvel Star Wars titles take place in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and have proven to be pretty fun.
One of my favorite books of 2015 - Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' The Fade Out published by Image - comes to a close today with issue 12. I'm sad to see the story end, but I am absolutely looking forward to whatever the team decides to do next. Brubaker's writing is amazing and Phillips' art is second to none. Everything about the book pops on my iPad.
I simple can't believe that one of my favorite debuts of 2015 was a book about Archie Andrews, but there it is. Last month, Mark Waid revealed the "Lipstick Incident" that broke up Archie and Betty, after teasing the reveal for the first three months. In this week's Archie No. 5, it looks like we're getting the start of the Betty-Veronica battle, with Jughead instigating a bit. Definitely worth checking out, in my opinion.
Comic books, of course can be purchased at your local comic book shop - find your nearest store by using the Comic Shop Locator - or you can also purchase them digitally.
